Job Description

PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST
(Mentor) for ADULT mental health clients Marshall and Jackson Counties in
Alabama Summary of Responsibilities:
Peer Support Specialists assists in the delivery of substance abuse and/or mental illness treatment services in accordance with the Alabama Department of Mental Health Administrative Code. Peer Support Specialists perform a wide range of tasks that are designed to assist consumers in recovery and living in the community by sharing his/her own life experience with a mental health and/or substance use disorder.
Examples of Job Requirements:
  • Assist clients in the acquisition and exercise of skills needed to support recovery.
  • Assist clients in accessing and/or engaging in treatment and in symptom management.
  • Promote socialization, recovery, and self-advocacy.
  • Provide guidance in the development of natural community supports and basic daily living skills. In residential programs, provide supervision of clients' health, welfare and safety twenty-four hours a day and implement activities in accordance with daily schedule.
  • In residential programs, Peer Support Specialist must maintain MAC (Medication Assistance Certification) and current delegation through the Nurse Delegation Program.
Assist with transportation of clients as appropriate. Assist with implementation of drug testing as appropriate. Provide community outreach services. Maintain appropriate written clinical documentation to support each service, activity and session provided within the scope of the program.
Supervisor:
The supervisor of this position will be either a Program Coordinator or Program Director.
Required Qualifications:
Must have personally experienced mental illness, must be in recovery, must be open-minded, and willing to share experiences with mental illness publicly. Must be a High School Graduate or have a GED. Must have good communication skills, both written and oral. Must have completed and passed the Certified Peer Specialist Training approved and sponsored by ADMH.ealth.
