The Director of Counseling Services provides leadership, administrative oversight, and clinical direction for the College's mental health counseling services. As a key member of the Student Development division within Student Affairs, the Director is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, ethical, and developmentally appropriate mental health care to traditional and non‑traditional students. This role supports the emotional well‑being, academic success, and personal development of the student body through direct services, supervision, outreach, and campus collaboration.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Leadership & Supervision Provide clinical supervision to counseling interns and practicum students from partner universities and training programs. Develop and maintain strong relationships with regional counseling, psychology, and social work programs to support ongoing internship placements. Ensure compliance with professional ethical standards, licensure requirements, and best practices in clinical service delivery. Direct Clinical Services Maintain accurate and confidential counseling records, including progress notes, crisis documentation, and safety plans, in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional guidelines. Provide individual counseling both in person and virtually, crisis intervention, and mental health assessments for students presenting with a range of emotional, behavioral, and psychological concerns. Develop and implement crisis response protocols, including crisis assessments and safety planning. Refer students to community-based mental health providers when needs fall outside the scope of campus services. Outreach, Education & Consultation Design and deliver campus-wide outreach programs, workshops, and trainings focused on mental health awareness, prevention, and early intervention. Provide consultation to faculty, staff, administrators, and Residence Life regarding student mental health concerns and supportive strategies. Collaborate with campus partners to promote a supportive, inclusive, and wellness‑oriented campus environment. Administrative & Organizational Leadership Oversee daily operations of the Counseling Services office, including scheduling, service delivery, documentation practices, and compliance with institutional policies. Serve on college committees as appointed, contributing mental health expertise to campus initiatives and policy development. Identify and pursue research, assessment, and grant opportunities that enhance counseling services and support innovative mental health programming. Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain licensure and remain current with emerging trends in college mental health.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Independent clinical licensure in North Carolina (e.g., LCMHC, LMFT, LCSW, or equivalent). Minimum of three years of clinical experience, preferably in a college or university setting. Experience providing clinical supervision to interns or provisionally licensed clinicians.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in higher education, student affairs, or college counseling environments. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver outreach programming. Experience with crisis management and campus‑based behavioral intervention. Familiarity with grant writing, program evaluation, or research initiatives.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong clinical assessment, crisis intervention, and case management skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and campus partners.
