Job Description:
Reporting to the Director of the Counseling Center, the Associate Director of the Counseling Center is responsible for providing a coordinated and comprehensive system of treatment services aimed at enhancing the academic, emotional, and social development and well-being of students while promoting respect for self, others, and diversity within the University community. In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director is responsible for the successful operation of the Counseling Center Essential Functions/Characteristics In conjunction with the Director, ensure the successful operation of the Counseling Center and act as Director in their absence. Clinical Duties Provide individual and group counseling to students experiencing personal concerns while continuously adhering to ethical and legal standards of practice. Conduct crisis appointments, intakes, post-hospitalization meetings, psychological assessments, and other specialized clinical interventions. Continuously compose and update clinical records in a timely manner. Participate in the rotation of on-call and after-hours crisis management, as assigned by the Director. Consult about students of concern and other matters of importance to the Counseling Center with administrators, faculty, staff, family members of students, and on- and off-campus treatment providers. Administrative Duties Abide by and maintain Counseling Center and University policies and procedures. In collaboration with the Director, continually monitor, assess, and modify, when needed, operations within the Counseling Center. Facilitate and manage all Counseling Center administrative staff meetings, clinical staff meetings, and external consultations in the absence of the Director. Provide administrative supervision for all Counseling Center personnel in the absence of the Director. Training Duties Serve as a primary trainer in the Counseling Center's onboarding process for graduate-level trainees. Function as an individual supervisor for trainees that includes consistent supervisory meetings and oversight of trainee record-keeping. Provide ongoing feedback to trainees and compose and utilize formalized evaluations for trainees. Outreach Duties Serve as the primary representative of the Counseling Center for all Orientation-related events and presentations that occur annually in June to answer questions and provide information on services available. Coordinate with other departments in the facilitation of Mental Health First Aid or similar training programs for the University community. Serve as the Counseling Center's liaison for interactions with other departments on campus. Develop and implement psychoeducational outreach programs, including those requested by administrators, faculty, staff, or student organizations. Additional Functions Participate in and contribute to department staff meetings and case consultations. Coordinate or assist Counseling Center efforts in a particular domain (e.g., health psychology, sports psychology, suicide prevention, technology).
Requirements:
Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field. Must hold an active Rhode Island professional license or obtain a Rhode Island professional license within 1 year of start date. Minimum 5 years of post-graduate experience in one or more college/university counseling center settings. Minimum 2 years of experience in the training and supervision of graduate-level trainees. Knowledge and experience in working with diverse populations of students and university personnel. Ability to work non-traditional hours and represent the Counseling Center on an infrequent basis for campus events, emergency situations, and outreach programs. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.
D) in counseling or clinical psychology from an APA-accredited program. Minimum 3 years of experience as an Assistant Director or similar position in a higher education counseling center. Minimum 1 year of experience coordinating campus-wide mental health psychoeducation programs. Minimum of 1 internship or fellowship in a college/university counseling center. At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
