Job Description

What are we looking for in a Forensic Peer Support Counselor? Forensic Peer Counselors working as part of the Diversion Team use their own lived experience with mental health or substance use treatment to help support & motivate clients who are currently involved with the criminal justice system. The Forensic Peer Counselor connects with individuals who have legal involvement either through incarceration, involvement with pre-trial services, probation, or frequent contact with law enforcement. The Forensic Peer Support Counselor will work with individuals to assist them in transitioning out of incarceration into community-based treatment services and assist with identifying and addressing perceived barriers and provide support. Forensic Peer Counselors assist clients with developing independent living skills, coping skills, community adjustment skills, and self-advocacy. This position is best suited for someone who is ready to use their own experiences to support others and is willing to travel locally each day. The schedule for this role is Sunday-Wednesday 8am-7pm. Peer Support Counselor duties may include: building a relationship with incarcerated clients to engage them in planning their release from jail and connecting with outpatient services upon release modeling ways to engage with others to increase social supports, develop meaningful relationships, and access & navigate community resources participating in crisis & treatment planning and advocating for the client's wishes and perspectives throughout the process sharing personal experiences of recovery, as appropriate, to encourage clients in their treatment assessing clients for safety and risk to self or others, and taking appropriate crisis intervention measures when indicated completing all required documentation in a timely manner
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED Must be a self-identified consumer of mental health or substance use services in stable recovery for at least one year Eligible for Peer Counselor certification provided by the
Washington State Healthcare Authority:
