About Great Lakes Dryhootch Great Lakes Dryhootch is a veteran-founded nonprofit providing peer-driven mental health and recovery services. Our mission is to help veterans survive the peace through culturally competent, trauma-informed, veteran-to-veteran support. Dryhootch operates Community Support Programs and provides Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) that are Medicaid-billable in Wisconsin. We are expanding our CCS peer support services and seeking a qualified Veteran Peer Support Specialist to join our team. Position Overview The Veteran Peer Support Specialist will provide CCS-authorized, Medicaid-billable peer support services to veterans living with mental health and/or substance use challenges. This role requires strong documentation skills, collaboration with clinical teams, and adherence to Wisconsin DHS 36 standards for CCS services. This is a mission-driven clinical support role rooted in lived experience. Key Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one CCS peer support services to enrolled veterans and civilians
  • Deliver services in community settings (home visits, coffee shop setting, community-based locations)
  • Support veterans/civilians in recovery planning and goal setting
  • Assist with skill-building in areas such as: ○ Independent living ○ Employment readiness ○ Social connection ○ Coping strategies ○ System navigation (VA, housing, benefits)
  • Maintain timely and compliant Medicaid documentation
  • Enter service notes into electronic health record system
  • Coordinate with Service Facilitators, therapists, and CCS teams
  • Participate in treatment team meetings
  • Support outreach and enrollment of eligible veterans into CCS Required Qualifications
  • Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Wisconsin Certified Peer Specialist OR Bachelors degree in a mental health major ○ Eligible and willing to obtain certification within 6 months
  • Experience with mental health recovery and/or substance use recovery
  • Ability to document services in compliance with Medicaid standards
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Reliable transportation and ability to provide services in the community Preferred Qualifications Lived experience as a military veteran with firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by fellow service members.
Strong background in crisis management, crisis intervention, and behavioral health principles. Knowledge of mental health counseling, addiction counseling, social work practices, and motivational interviewing techniques. Ability to effectively use Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems for documentation and case management. Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse veteran populations. Demonstrated mentoring skills with a compassionate approach to peer support. Relevant certifications or training in crisis intervention or behavioral health are preferred but not required.   • Experience working within Wisconsin CCS (DHS 36)
  • Familiarity with Medicaid billing requirements
  • Experience working with veterans involved in: Criminal justice system ○ Homelessness ○ Substance use recovery ○ Trauma-related conditions
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing (O.A.R.S.)
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally competent care Compensation & Structure
  • $30 per hour
  • Full-Time preferred (minimum productivity expectations required)
  • Community-based position (not office-bound)
  • Flexible scheduling with accountability for billable service hours
  • Professional supervision and continuing education opportunities Productivity Expectations Provide peer support to veterans experiencing mental health challenges, substance use issues, or crisis situations through active listening and empathetic engagement.
Utilize crisis intervention techniques to de-escalate situations and ensure safety for clients and staff. Assist Consumers in navigating behavioral health services, including mental health counseling, addiction treatment, and social work resources. Employ motivational interviewing strategies to motivate positive behavioral change and reinforce recovery goals. Document interactions accurately within Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with privacy standards. Mentor veterans by sharing personal experiences of recovery and resilience to inspire hope and empowerment. Collaborate with clinical teams to coordinate care plans and provide ongoing support tailored to individual needs.
