Drawing upon their own lived experience in recovery, the CPRS establishes trusting relationships that inspire individuals to achieve and maintain long-term recovery while improving their overall health and wellness. The CPRS serves as a mentor, coach, advocate, and educator, helping participants identify strengths, overcome barriers, build resilience, and connect with community resources. This position promotes person-centered, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented services while supporting organizational standards, regulatory compliance, and best practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Peer Recovery Support Provide one-on-one and group peer recovery support using lived experience to promote hope, resilience, and long-term recovery. Establish authentic, trusting relationships that encourage participant engagement in treatment and recovery services. Assist participants in identifying personal recovery goals, strengths, and wellness strategies. Serve as a positive role model demonstrating healthy recovery behaviors and self-advocacy. Recovery Planning and Coaching Assist participants in developing individualized recovery and wellness plans that support self-directed goals. Provide coaching in areas including recovery maintenance, relapse prevention, independent living skills, employment readiness, education, housing stability, and community integration. Encourage participants to utilize natural supports, peer networks, and recovery community resources. Promote self-determination, empowerment, and informed decision-making throughout the recovery process. Behavioral Health Support Utilize Motivational Interviewing, strength-based practices, and trauma-informed care principles to support behavioral change. Promote harm reduction strategies and recovery-oriented interventions appropriate to each participant's goals. Support individuals experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Reinforce coping skills, wellness planning, and recovery maintenance strategies. Crisis Intervention Recognize behavioral health crises and respond appropriately within the scope of the peer recovery specialist role. Provide emotional support and de-escalation during crisis situations. Immediately communicate safety concerns to clinical supervisors and licensed staff. Assist with safety planning and follow-up support after crisis events. Care Coordination Collaborate with therapists, nurses, case managers, physicians, and other multidisciplinary team members. Participate in treatment team meetings and contribute valuable peer perspectives regarding participant progress. Assist participants in accessing healthcare, behavioral health services, transportation, employment services, education, housing, and community resources. Advocate for participant rights while encouraging personal responsibility and self-advocacy. Documentation and Compliance Complete timely, accurate, and thorough documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with
HIPAA, 42 CFR
Part 2, and all applicable federal, state, and organizational regulations. Maintain required certifications, continuing education, and training. Comply with organizational policies, CARF standards, Medicaid documentation requirements, and professional ethical guidelines. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Current Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification required or certification obtained within the timeframe required by state regulations. Must have lived experience in recovery from a mental health condition, substance use disorder, or co-occurring disorder and demonstrate sustained personal recovery. Valid driver's license with reliable transportation (if required for community-based services). Ability to pass required background screenings and maintain eligibility for employment. Preferred Qualifications Associate's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field. One (1) year of experience providing peer support or behavioral health services. Experience working in outpatient, residential, crisis, ACT, mobile crisis, or community behavioral health settings. Bilingual abilities are highly desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of recovery-oriented systems of care. Knowledge of behavioral health, substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and trauma-informed care. Working knowledge of motivational interviewing and harm reduction principles. Ability to establish therapeutic peer relationships built on trust and mutual respect. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong crisis recognition and de-escalation abilities. Effective organizational, time management, and documentation skills. Proficiency using Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Microsoft Office applications. Ability to maintain professional boundaries while using lived experience appropriately. Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to travel within the community to provide peer support services. Ability to respond appropriately during crisis situations. Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer systems. Work Environment This position may work in outpatient clinics, community settings, participant homes, hospitals, residential programs, shelters, and other behavioral health environments. The role requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to interact effectively with individuals experiencing behavioral health crises.
