Job Description

Who We Are :
Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. When children feel safe and supported, their ability to cope and learn skyrockets. As a Child Care Aide, you'll help bring that supportive environment into our center while supporting families receiving important services. Minimum Education and Experience :
High school diploma or GED; college coursework in child development, education or a related field preferred; one year of childcare experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience providing childcare to children aged 6 weeks to 12 years preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of the principles and practices of the care and supervision of children; of effective child behavior management. Ability to supervise children; to observe situations; to report information completely and accurately; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Basic understanding of child safety, first-aid and hygiene standards preferred. Ability to remain patient, calm, and attentive while supervising children preferred. Ability to monitor multiple children at once while ensuring individual needs are met preferred. Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment preferred. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision preferred. Ability to follow instructions and established childcare protocols preferred. Ability to provide direct care and supervision which includes but not limited to, lifting and carrying children, squatting, stooping, bending, and reaching overhead.
Additional Requirements :
Possess, or obtain within a specified timeframe, certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Supervises children in a safe, attentive and engaging manner while their caregivers attend services in the center;
  • Leads basic enriching activities such as coloring, games, age-appropriate play and light movement activities;
  • Assists with simple toileting needs and diaper checks/changes as needed with parental permission;
  • Prepares and maintains a safe and sanitary physical environment for children, including daily set up and cleanup of childcare space;
  • Performs general office/administrative functions and special projects; and
  • Performs other work as required.

  • 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday
