Job Description

Live-In Resident Assistant (RA)
  • Housing & Residence Life Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA), Birmingham, Alabama The Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) is seeking dedicated, responsible, and student-centered individuals to serve as Live-In Resident Assistants (RAs) within our Housing & Residence Life program.
ASFA is Alabama's only public arts-focused school serving students in grades 7-12, with a residential program for students in grades 9-12 from across the state. Live-In Resident Assistants play a vital role in supporting the safety, structure, engagement, and overall residential experience of our boarding students. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about youth development, student support, leadership, mentoring, and community building. Position Summary The Live-In Resident Assistant (RA) is a full-time, live-in residential position responsible for helping maintain a safe, structured, and supportive residential environment for high school boarding students. RAs assist with student supervision, residential operations, programming, community development, and policy enforcement while serving as positive role models for students. This position is a 40-hour-per-week role, primarily focused on evening coverage, and includes some weekend work as needed to support residential operations, student programming, and community needs.   • Student Supervision & Community Standards
  • Support student engagement, structure, organization, and accountability within the residence hall
  • Help maintain a safe, respectful, and well-managed residential environment
  • Uphold ASFA Housing & Residence Life policies and expectations
  • Assist with student discipline and behavioral accountability as needed
  • Serve as a visible and approachable adult presence for boarding students Residence Hall Operations
  • Conduct room checks
  • Conduct roll call
  • Monitor and help oversee co-ed lounges and shared student spaces
  • Coordinate and support designated clean lounge days
  • Lock and secure the residence hall floor as needed, particularly during coverage gaps
  • Assist with early holiday return check-ins to ensure smooth and organized student arrival processes
  • Provide on-site support during emergency weather days or other urgent situations, including communication and coordination as needed
  • Student Engagement, Programming & Community Development
  • Plan, host, and support student programming that promotes community, engagement, and positive residential experiences
  • Assist with weekend programming and student engagement efforts
  • Support programming and oversight in co-ed lounges and shared residential spaces
  • Meet and collaborate with Residence Life Council to support student leadership and community development
  • Help foster a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging residential community Health, Safety & Wellness Support
  • Assist with medication-related procedures in accordance with ASFA protocols and staff guidance
  • Support student well-being by communicating concerns appropriately and following established protocols
  • Respond appropriately to student concerns, emergencies, and residential incidents
  • Team Collaboration & Training Support
  • Attend staff meetings, including earlier and increased meetings as scheduled
  • Support training efforts in coordination with Housing & Residence Life leadership
  • Assist with onboarding and cross-training initiatives as needed
  • Serve as a liaison between full-time staff and evening/weekend residential staff to support communication, consistency, and role development
  • Learn and assist with both afternoon and evening RA responsibilities to provide flexibility and backup coverage during peak times or staffing gaps Administrative & Operational Support
  • Assist with administrative tasks that support Housing & Residence Life operations
  • Support Purchase Order (PO) requests and related logistical needs as assigned
  • Help improve operational efficiency and provide backup support during high-demand periods Preferred Qualifications Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with students, adolescents, or in residential/student life settings preferred
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to maintain structure while building positive relationships with students
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and reliability
  • Interest in education, counseling, student affairs, youth development, social work, psychology, sociology, or related fields is a plus Schedule Expectations
  • Full-time, live-in residential position
  • 40 hours per week
  • Schedule is primarily focused on evening coverage
  • Some weekend work required based on staffing, programming, and operational needs
  • Some flexibility may be required during special events, holiday transitions, emergency weather days, or staffing needs
  • As a live-in residential role, the position requires a consistent on-campus presence and availability to support the residential community as needed
