About the College/Unit/Department The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and training institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the Research Vessel (R/V) Savannah. The R/V Savannah is owned and operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System ( UNOLS) and Academic Research Fleet ( ARF). Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Availability a. Be available to support students during the Field Study experience. This will include negotiated duty periods during evening hours and "on call" hours not to exceed 25 hours per week. b. Reside on campus during the employment period. c. Coordinate with Program Director to schedule periods away from campus. d. Support staff at the UGA/Marine Extension Aquarium not exceeding 15 hours per week. Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities Community Building a. Maintain interactions with students and be accessible to support their experience and success. b. Develop a sense of inclusiveness and connectedness. c. Plan, implement, and evaluate community building activities. d. Maintain awareness of students' academic success, sense of belonging, and overall well-being. e. Ability to work with K-12 students (minors) on educational programs. Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities Crisis Management a. Provide leadership and model appropriate behavior in a crisis. b. Fulfill on-call responsibilities as communicated by the Program Director. c. Demonstrate care and concern for student wellbeing by following up with students involved in crisis situations. d. Confront alleged policy violations, behavioral concerns, and facility issues. e. Consult and work with Program Director and/or other staff members on call when developing a plan to respond to student issues. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities Administrative Skills a. Submit work requests for all facility concerns. b. Meet deadlines set by Program Director and/or Institute. c. Attend and be punctual to scheduled meetings, trainings, and events. d. Respond to all work-related emails within 24 hours. e. Ability to perform duties as aquarium cashier. Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities Interpersonal Skills a. Interact with residents on a consistent basis to demonstrate genuine concern and care for residents. b. Demonstrate active listening skills when interacting with students. c. Model and promote an environment of respect and inclusion. d. Communicate in a professional manner with staff, residents, and campus partners. Percentage of time 15
