Job Description

Job Overview The Community Outreach Coordinator serves as a liaison between the organization and the community, promoting animal welfare programs, educational initiatives, and adoption services. This role combines public engagement, event coordination, and hands-on animal handling responsibilities. The ideal candidate is passionate about animal welfare, possesses excellent communication skills, and has experience safely handling companion animals. Key Responsibilities Represent the organization at community events, outreach programs, schools, businesses, and public gatherings. Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners, sponsors, volunteers, and local organizations. Educate the public about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, adoption opportunities, and available community resources. Assist with planning, organizing, and executing outreach events, adoption events, and fundraising activities. Safely handle, transport, and care for dogs, cats, and other companion animals during events and community programs. Monitor animal behavior and ensure the safety and well-being of animals and the public during interactions. Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers participating in outreach activities. Maintain accurate records of outreach efforts, event participation, and community engagement metrics. Assist with social media content, promotional materials, and public awareness campaigns. Support other shelter or organizational activities as needed. Qualifications Previous experience in community outreach, public relations, customer service, or a related field. Demonstrated animal handling experience, preferably in a shelter, rescue, veterinary, or animal care environment. Knowledge of animal behavior, welfare practices, and safe handling techniques. Strong interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Comfortable working with diverse populations and community groups. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and handle animals of various sizes and temperaments. Flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Requirements Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to operate organization vehicles for transporting animals, supplies, and event materials. Reliable transportation. Successful completion of background screening, if required. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in animal shelters, rescues, or veterinary clinics. Volunteer management experience. Bilingual communication skills are a plus. Familiarity with the Detroit community and local animal welfare resources.
