Candidates from outside or within State Service can apply. As a Social Work Assistant 1 you will work with an interdisciplinary team and duties will include:

  • Interviewing individuals and their families to gather background information
  • Preparing case histories and determining eligibility for services
  • Advocating and assisting individuals in identifying and obtaining services Minimum QualificationsCandidates from outside or within State Service can be considered for hire under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement - Statewide (NY HELPS) program if they have a bachelor's degree in a human service field and 1 year of social work experience.
Substitution:

Master's degree in social work can substitute for 1 year of specialized experience. OR Candidates from within State Service can be considered transfer to a competitive class position if they have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. The Social Work Assistant Traineeship is 1-year in length at the Salary Grade - 12. After the successful completion of the 1-year traineeship, trainees will advance to the full performance Social Work Assistant 1 level at Salary Grade -14 if their performance is considered satisfactory.
