Job Description
Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to provide recovery-oriented, person-centered peer support services to individuals receiving behavioral health services to join our team. The ideal candidate uses lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to support individuals in achieving wellness, independence, and community integration through peer-led support. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will serve as a vital link between clients and the services they need, providing guidance, encouragement, and practical assistance to foster recovery and resilience. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in individuals' lives while working within a dynamic and supportive environment. Responsibilities Provide 1-on-1 peer support to individuals experiencing mental health or substance use challenges, utilizing personal lived experience to foster trust and rapport. Assist clients in developing recovery goals and strategies, promoting self-advocacy and independence. Offer crisis intervention and crisis management support during acute episodes, ensuring safety and stabilization. Complete timely documentation for all peer encounters per Medicaid and DBHDS guidelines Participate in team meetings, trainings, and supervision Advocate for clients' needs within the healthcare system while respecting their autonomy and cultural backgrounds. Collaborate with clinical teams and care coordinators Uphold confidentiality, ethics, professional boundaries, and follow all HIPAA regulations
Requirements:
Must be a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) in the state of Virginia Minimum of 2 years in sustained recovery, 3 years preferred High school diploma or Equivalent Strong communication and listening skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Understanding of trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented systems of care Valid driver's license and reliable transportation Must pass background check and drug screen Preferred Qualifications Experience providing peer support or behavioral health services Knowledge of Virginia Medicaid and DBHDS service systems and documentation
