About Adrian Rea Literacy Center:
At the Adrian Rea Literacy Center, we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment where adult learners can experience a supervised, outstanding literacy program regardless of their ability to pay. Adult Basic Education and Adult English as a Second Language Learners are partnered with a volunteer tutor. Tutor/Learner pairs meet weekly 1:1 for 2 hours to improve learner literacy and help the learner meet their goals. Services are provided to adults 18+ from Lenawee County and the surrounding area.
About this position:
ARLC is hiring a Volunteer Coordinator who will be responsible for the management of the volunteer program, including recruitment, training, and supervision. Because we are a small staff, this position will also have some administrative duties related to volunteer coordination. Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct tutor orientations and new tutor trainings to onboard new volunteers
  • Oversee first tutoring appointments, and follow up with support
  • Assist in program development for ARLC's educational operations by ensuring staff and volunteer coverage for tutor sessions, this includes identifying areas in need of additional resources and communicating these needs with ED in a timely manner
  • Train, assist, and support learners and volunteer tutors in the use of the curriculum
  • Participate in adult education working groups and professional development opportunities
  • Assist in Volunteer Recruitment plan development and implementation
  • Coordinate ongoing volunteer tutor education opportunities
  • Coordinate volunteer appreciation activities Additional Duties
  • Assist in tracking learner progress in database
  • Update and maintain database and paper folder files with assessment results, achievements, volunteer and learner hours, and other relevant information
  • Assist volunteers with utilizing and troubleshooting technology
  • As a small organization, all staff assist with data entry, keeping the space clean and tidy, and other day-to-day tasks as needed. Required Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt and improvise instruction to meet tutors' and learners' needs
  • Willingness to function effectively on a small and fast-paced team
  • Committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all, in a community-based "family"-type environment Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree is required; A degree in education, English, social work or a related field preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with diverse populations and organizations, required
  • Volunteer Coordination experience preferred
  • TESOL or TEFL certificate preferred, but not required
  • Bilingual Preferred Physical Requirements Frequent sitting and standing.
Hours:
The ARLC is open Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm There are various possible schedules options available for this position, including: Monday - Thursday 10-8pm Two days a week 8-6 and two days 10-8 3 day 36 hr week (with some remote hours) We will be flexible for the right person; however, at least two evenings per week (alternating between Monday-Thursday) are required. Some weekend hours required (usually quarterly) for volunteer trainings and community events Compensation & Benefits
  • Annual salary range $42,000-45,000
