Job Description

The Community Outreach - Volunteer Coordinator for the Animal Care Center is responsible for developing, coordinating, and managing the animal shelter's volunteer program. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for implementing community outreach initiatives that support the growth of the volunteer program, mission, operations, and public image of the City's animal care center. This position serves as a primary liaison between the animal care center and volunteers, community partners, schools, nonprofit organizations, and the general public. The Coordinator recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises volunteers while developing outreach programs designed to increase community engagement, promote responsible pet ownership, enhance adoption efforts, and support animal welfare initiatives. This role requires strong organizational skills, public communication abilities, and a passion for animal welfare and community service. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization. Develop, coordinate, and manage the animal care center's volunteer program, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and retention. Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers, community groups, schools, nonprofits, and partner organizations. Plan and conduct community outreach activities, educational programs, presentations, and special events related to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Safely handle all animals using Fear Free procedures and positive reinforcement techniques as trained, using approved techniques and equipment. Coordinate volunteer assignments to support animal care, enrichment, adoption events, fundraising activities, and community initiatives. Ensure volunteers comply with City policies, safety standards, and animal handling procedures. Monitor volunteer performance, address concerns, and recommend corrective action or dismissal when necessary. Assist with adoption promotions, public engagement campaigns, and shelter marketing efforts in coordination with Animal Care staff. Maintain accurate records related to volunteer hours, training, participation, and program outcomes. Prepare reports, statistics, and documentation related to outreach and volunteer program effectiveness. Support public-facing animal care center operations by providing courteous and professional customer service. Assist with emergency or disaster-related animal response efforts involving volunteers as appropriate. Perform all other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Two (2) years of experience in volunteer coordination, community outreach, public engagement, nonprofit work, animal welfare, or a related field; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, and communicate with diverse groups. Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in communications, public administration, nonprofit management, animal science, or a related field. Experience working in an animal shelter, animal welfare organization, or municipal environment. Experience planning community events or managing volunteer programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of volunteer program management principles and community outreach strategies. Knowledge of animal welfare concepts and shelter operations preferred. Skill in public speaking, presentation delivery, and community engagement. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift or carry materials up to 25 pounds as needed for events and activities.
