What they do
A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

How you'll contribute A Drug and Alcohol Counselor who excels in this role: Provides direct assessment and counseling services to adolescent, adult, and geriatric clients. Provides individual, marital, family and group psychotherapy as assigned. Maintains accurate and complete records, including adequate paperwork to facilitate proper billing. Knowledgeable of CPT Codes and their appropriate and effective application. Maintains confidentiality of all patient, hospital, and employee related information. Delivers personalized, efficient care with respect for the individual's spiritual and cultural differences. Participates in community consultation and education as requested. Participates in facility treatment team meetings communicating clinical impressions. Compiles comprehensive patient/family history and records the data. Works to ensure effective performance and productivity maintaining a flexible schedule to accommodate patients. The requirements listed below are below representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required: Bilingual and/or English Spanish speaking preferred and ability to work with culturally diverse population. High School Diploma or equivalent - required AA in Social Services or equivalent (90 quarter/60 semester college credits) or bachelor's degree in behavioral health sciences.
