Aug 24, 2026 Job Description Special Education Life Skills Classroom Teacher -Middle School PURPOSE:
The Special Education Life Skills Teacher provides instruction and support within a continuum of special education services designed to meet the academic, communication, adaptive, behavioral, social-emotional, vocational, and functional needs of students with significant support needs. This position supports students in developing independence through instruction in functional academics, communication, daily living skills, interpersonal skills, self-advocacy, and transition-related skills. The teacher is responsible for implementing specially designed instruction aligned to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), documenting student progress and outcomes, coordinating services, and collaborating with staff, families, and community partners to ensure meaningful participation across school and community settings. The teacher develops structured, safe, and supportive learning environments that promote engagement, belonging, independence, and student success across instructional settings. Reports to: Principal Essential Functions (In alignment with the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-0000 to 584-020-0045)) Instruction & Student Programming (Continuum of Services) Plans and delivers specially designed instruction aligned to IEP goals across academic, communication, adaptive, behavioral, vocational, social-emotional, and functional skill areas Provides instruction within a continuum of services, supporting student access to specialized, general education, community-based, and vocational learning settings as appropriate Delivers instruction integrating functional academics, communication, daily living, self-advocacy, interpersonal, and independence skills Develops and implements evidence-based instructional practices, individualized supports, and measurable goals aligned to student needs and outcomes Adapts curriculum, instructional materials, environments, and supports to ensure access, engagement, and progress for students with significant support needs Assesses, monitors, and documents student progress using district-approved tools, progress-monitoring systems, and data-based instructional decision-making Supports transition-related skill development and collaborates with teams to prepare students for postsecondary education, employment, community participation, and independent living, as appropriate Learning Environment & Student Support Creates structured, predictable, safe, and supportive learning environments that promote student engagement, regulation, belonging, and independence Maintains high expectations for student participation, communication, learning, and behavior Collaborates with school teams to develop, implement, and monitor positive behavior supports and individualized support plans utilizing proactive strategies, de-escalation techniques, and approved crisis intervention practices aligned with district procedures and student plans Supports implementation of student health management plans and maintains student dignity, safety, confidentiality, and respectful care practices while supporting students with personal care or physical support needs IEP Development, Compliance, and Case Management Performs case management responsibilities for assigned students, including coordination of services, IEP implementation, progress monitoring, communication with team members, and compliance with district, state, and federal requirements Coordinates evaluation and reevaluation processes with district specialists and participates in IEP meetings, student staffing meetings, transition meetings, and multidisciplinary team meetings Maintains accurate, complete, and confidential records related to student services, progress, assessments, attendance, and reporting requirements Collaboration & Coordination of Services Collaborates with general education teachers, specialists, instructional assistants, families,and community agencies to support student success across settings Establishes and maintains positive, collaborative relationships with parents/caregivers through ongoing communication and partnership regarding student progress and programming Program Coordination & Supervision Leads, trains, organizes, and supports instructional assistants, volunteers, and other staff working within the program Coordinates student schedules, instructional supports, transitions, classroom systems, materials, and resources to support effective program implementation Maintains equipment, instructional materials, adaptive supports, and supplies necessary for student programming Other Functions and Responsibilities Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the e?cient and e?ective functioning of the school program To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the above essential duties satisfactorily. Minimum Qualifications Valid Oregon teaching license with Special Education endorsement Knowledge of IDEA, special education compliance, and IEP processes Experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities, including significant support needs Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and interdisciplinary teamsPreferred/Asset:
Experience supervising and supporting instructional assistants Experience supporting students with daily living and health needs Bilingual (Spanish/English)Job Requirements:

development, evaluation procedures, compliance requirements, and procedural safeguards Data collection, progress monitoring, and data-based instructional decision-making Trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and equity-centered practices Community resources, transition systems, and interagency collaboration Applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and ethical practices Ability to: Work collaboratively with students, families, staff, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams Support students with a wide range of disabilities and significant support needs across instructional settings Remain calm, flexible, and responsive in high-stress or crisis situations Analyze situations, problem solve effectively, and implement appropriate interventions and supports Maintain safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments Manage multiple priorities, timelines, and interruptions while maintaining attention to detail Provide leadership, direction, and support to instructional assistants and program staff Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records Communicate effectively and professionally with diverse groups Physically support students and respond appropriately to student care, mobility, behavioral, and safety needs as required by the position Working Environment Requires frequent standing, walking, and physical movement, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and crouching May include responding to students in crisis situations Work is performed in a school environment with occasional exposure to unpredictable situations Education Bachelor's degree or higher in Education or a related field required Certificates & Licenses Valid Oregon teaching license with Special Education endorsement (or ability to obtain) CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain) Ability to complete required de-escalation and crisis prevention training (e.g., Mandt) Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-0000 to 584-020-0045)NOTE:
