Job Description

Job Summary Provides differential and therapeutic services by assessing and treating patients in Inpatient, Outpatient, and Swing Bed settings with central or peripheral disorders of speech, language, voice, or swallowing. Work closely with other staff (including Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, Medical Providers, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, Dietician, and Radiology staff) to ensure patients make the most of their rehabilitation experience. Defines patient's degree and type of speech, language, voice, or swallowing impairment by selecting and administering the most appropriate test instruments and preparing written or computerized diagnostic reports. Set appropriate and attainable goals for the patient and document progress toward goals. Counsels patients and families regarding speech, language, or swallowing disorders and provides them with treatment options. Follows treatment plan with frequency and duration as set upon evaluation. Re-assess the patient as required (6 days inpatient, 30 days SNF) and modify the therapy plan as needed. Coordinates treatment with patients and other staff members. Attends staff meetings as directed by supervisor. Conducts in-services for nursing staff. Participates in quality assurance program and makes recommendations regarding quality improvement. Meets with case management regarding discharge planning of patients. Completes continuing education as required by licensing board. Assists with clerical duties as needed. Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff. Conducts themselves professionally and is aware of tone/noise level generated by personal conversations. Performs other duties as assigned. Education and Qualifications Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Maintain a current Louisiana Speech Pathology License. ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence. Maintain current CPR. Satisfactorily completes hospital orientation, annual competencies, and evaluations. Population served may range from infants to geriatrics and must pass competency checklists for all responsibilities outlined by the department program and policies. Physical Requirements Walk an average of one mile per day and transition from standing to the floor and back during service provision. Occasionally squatting, kneeling, balancing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level, pushing, pulling, and lifting/pulling on weights over 50 pounds. Dexterity for moving and positioning patients. Occasionally exposed to blood and bodily fluids.
