Job Description
Description We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join a mission-focused non-profit organization in Norwich, Connecticut. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative finance team while supporting core accounting operations, receivables, reporting, and compliance activities. The ideal candidate will enjoy balancing detail-oriented financial work with broader support across nonprofit accounting functions.
Responsibilities:
- Process incoming payments, apply cash receipts accurately, and follow up on outstanding balances to maintain timely collections.
- Maintain the general ledger by preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and ensuring financial data is recorded correctly.
- Assist with monthly and annual closing tasks by organizing schedules, reviewing balances, and supporting the completion of required entries.
- Produce financial reports and compile supporting records to help leadership monitor performance and maintain documentation standards.
- Monitor grant funding, donations, and participant-related payments to ensure transactions are tracked and allocated appropriately.
- Contribute to audit readiness by organizing financial materials, responding to information requests, and reinforcing internal control practices.
- Investigate account discrepancies and address finance-related questions with clear, timely communication.

- At least 2 years of experience in accounting, accounts receivable, or a closely related finance role.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience supporting month-end close activities within a non-profit environment.
- Familiarity with grant accounting or exposure to grant-funded financial processes.
- Strong proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
- Working knowledge of accounting software; experience with Sage is beneficial.
- High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail in financial recordkeeping.
- Ability to handle multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced work setting.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with solid analytical and problem-solving ability.
