Job Description
The STEP instructor is a teacher in a Career Technical Education (CTE) setting that supports students with disabilities in a career-technical environment. S upporting T ransitions to E mployment P rogram ensures students are supported in accessing the curriculum of hands-on career training while progressing toward graduation and industry credentials. The position emphasizes transition planning, workplace readiness, and collaboration with the JTC program to create a tiered system of support to align with real-world skills needed for employment.
Responsibilities:
Implement and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal regulations. Provide specialized instruction in behavioral and functional skill areas aligned with high school and career pathway standards. Adapt and modify technical content, assignments, and assessments to meet individual learning needs. Support students in earning industry credentials and completing career pathway requirements. Integrate employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and workplace professionalism into instruction. Facilitate transition planning focused on possible further education, employment, and independent living. Assist students with job readiness skills, including resume building, interviewing, and workplace expectations. Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals, graduation requirements, and career pathway benchmarks in collaboration with the case manager from the home district. Participate in IEP meetings, Evaluation Team Reports (ETRs), and transition planning conferences. Collaborate with related service providers, counselors, and work-based learning coordinators. Support students in work-based learning experiences, internships, or job placements as appropriate. Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and provide support in managing behavior in multiple settings. Maintain accurate and compliant special education documentation.Qualifications Required:
Valid Ohio Intervention Specialist License (Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Intensive preferred). Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's degree preferred). Transition to Work (TTW) Endorsement(or willingness to obtain). Knowledge of transition planning and workforce readiness skills. Strong collaboration skills, especially in co-teaching and hands-on instructional settings. Ability to adapt instruction for diverse learning needs in varying environments.Preferred:
Valid Ohio Van Driver's License (or willingness to obtain) to facilitate student transportation for work-based learning. Experience working in a Career & Technical Education (CTE) setting. Knowledge of transition planning requirements and post-secondary outcome development. Familiarity with industry credentialing programs and career pathway standards. Experience supporting students in work-based learning, internships, or community-based instruction. Background in co-teaching within hands-on, lab-based, or technical classrooms. Training in behavior intervention strategies, de-escalation techniques, and trauma-informed practices. Experience collaborating with business/industry partners or workforce development programs. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout classrooms, labs, and workshop environments. Ability to assist students with mobility or physical needs as required. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Ability to safely navigate and support students in technical/lab environments (e.g., shops, kitchens, healthcare labs). Ability to respond to student behaviors that may require physical intervention (per training and district policy). Work environment is a combination of traditional classroom settings and hands-on career-tech labs/workspaces. Exposure to a variety of technical environments (e.g., manufacturing labs, culinary kitchens, healthcare training rooms). Frequent collaboration with CTE instructors, counselors, and industry partners. May involve supervision of students in work-based learning settings. Work follows the academic calendar with occasional extended hours for meetings, IEP compliance, and student transition activities.
