Job Description

Summary:
Responsible for maintaining high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of medical equipment and surgical instruments. The SPD tech maintains consistency and continuous workflow in SPD. Maintains inventory and notifies OR Charge Nurse of shortages.
Duties and Responsibilities:
(The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except for those that begin with the word "May.") Sorts and returns inventory any extra instruments and process paper documentation. Take daily inventory of sterile extra instruments. Process Sterilization correct amount of surgery instruments needed to replenish surgery. Inspect and process all instruments before coming through the washer decontamination, or after, according to established procedures. Answer phone, provide routine information, or take messages regarding instruments and trays. Maintain clean and orderly work area by cleaning and disinfecting. Replenishes stock at workstations as needed. Proficient in all areas of department, including inspection, decontamination, and sterilizing instruments; including ability to operate all equipment in department. Attends mandatory department and Center for Health meetings, and other work-related educational programs. Functions as a resource person to various department personnel, new employees, and student technicians. Assist by precepting students and new employees. Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with department, medical center, Center for Health personnel, and outside agencies. Support the ASC's continuous quality improvement efforts to increase patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and improve utilization of the Center for Health's human, capital, and physical resources. Perform all other duties assigned by manager.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent. 1 year work experience in sterile processing or completion of an accredited program in sterile processing. Proficient in interpreting the surgery schedule to prepare for operative procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to maintain department and regulatory records indicating Sterile //Processing activity. Completes daily report in areas assigned. Basic interpersonal skills necessary to train, explain procedures, and assign work to lower classified personnel, and provide assistance in response to problems. Appropriate communication skills utilized to interact positively with patients, surgeons, and other patient care personnel, often during stressful or emergent situations. Ability to concentrate and analyze detail for up to eighty percent of work time when processing instrumentation and recording sterilization procedures. Ability to stand for eighty percent of work time when processing and sterilizing. Lift, push, and pull carts of equipment and supplies weighing up to 60 pounds. Addresses problems of department and ensures work is carried out efficiently and safely in absence of Clinical Director.
Preferred:
Completion of an accredited program in sterile processing.

(The following statements describe the physical abilities required to perform the essential job functions, although exceptions may be made to these requirements based on reasonable accommodations.) While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following on a daily basis: Lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Be in standing position for 80 percent of work time. Climb (ascend and/or descend) ramps on a weekly basis. Maintain body equilibrium (balance) to prevent falling while on narrow surfaces. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands. Communicate with other people, have good manual dexterity and color vision. Ability to use keyboard to enter data on a daily basis. Proofread and check documents for accuracy. Push and or pull supply carts, gurneys, procedural chairs or wheelchairs. Closely examine specimens, images, or other forms of output created by diagnostic equipment.
Work Environment:
Works in an area where there is exposure to infectious disease, although potential for personal harm or bodily injury is limited when utilizing all safety procedures and equipment. Exposure to latex products and heat from sterilizers and washers. Exposure to hazardous sterilization mixtures for 30 percent of work time.
Reporting Relationships:
Reports directly to Clinical Director. Reports to Preoperative Coordinator or Charge Nurse. Has limited responsibility for leading or supervising work of others.
