Job Description

The Public Works Department is looking for individuals who want to work in street maintenance. This individual will perform manual labor, operate hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, pneumatic tools, weed trimmers, and mowers, and may operate light and heavy construction equipment in the maintenance, repair, and/or alteration of streets, drainage, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, within Town right of ways and/or facilities. Under moderate supervision, performs a variety of manual labor tasks related to street maintenance, construction, clean up, public works and other related areas. Cleans and clears ditches, culverts, storm drains, and waterways of brush and trash. Performs work involving shoveling, mowing, trimming, raking, pruning, digging, and/or other related activities. Cleans and prepares streets for maintenance and repair including sweeping, crack- sealing, and filling potholes with cold patch or hot mix material on Town roads. Communicates and uses interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Utilize an operational management system to logs, and maintain database regarding quantity of materials handled, equipment operations, and/or other related information. Completes forms, work orders, timecards, and other in-house procedural and administrative documentation. Monitors inventory and supply levels and recommends replenishment of materials. Performs a variety of manual labor related to maintenance, construction, clean up, public works, and/or other related areas using a variety of hand and power tools to perform duties. Performs a variety of specialized and preventative maintenance work in assigned area of responsibility. Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules and operating and maintenance instructions. Repairs and finishes concrete. Operates a variety of trucks including light- and heavy-duty equipment in the construction, maintenance, and operation of all Town improvements, facilities, and other projects. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment prior to each use. Operates construction equipment, including street sweepers, front loaders, and various trucks and backhoes for the Public Works Department and/or other Town departments.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to exercise safety precautions and conform to safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of occupational and work zone hazards and safety practices. Knowledge of proper operation, care and maintenance of heavy equipment. Knowledge of street/highway maintenance, repair and construction work zone practices. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Town and Department policies, procedures and safety protocols. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Town, state and federal statutes, ordinances, codes, rules and regulations governing construction, heavy equipment operation and street maintenance. Knowledge of basic mechanical skills/understanding of materials, equipment and methods for roadway and drainage way construction Knowledge of proper operation and care of heavy and light equipment. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety guidelines. Skill in the safe use of heavy equipment, vegetation power and hand tools used in right of way maintenance. Ability to learn traffic control work zones protocols. Skill in operating and performing preventative maintenance for construction equipment. Skill in operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment such as: loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, water trucks as well as miscellaneous types of equipment. Skill in safe operation of heavy equipment, vehicles, power tools and hand tools. Skill using a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, pneumatic tools, weed trimmers, and mowers. Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. A High School diploma or GED. Two (2) years' experience in the operation of various construction equipment including but not limited to: front end loader, backhoe, rubber tire roller, steel drum rollers, and kick broom sweeper. Arizona Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B or higher with air brake and tanker endorsements with no restrictions within 6 months of hire. Possess basic Flagger Certification or ability to acquire within 12 months. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
A successful incumbent must be able to pass an Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) background check in order to be engaged in the act of supervising and coordinating the daily work of assigned ADC inmates, successful candidate will then be eligible for Special Assignment Pay as defined by the Town of Oro Valley standard operation procedure. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires candidates successfully pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen prior to start date. This position is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol screening as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382. Work is performed in an outdoor environment, in all weather conditions. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Must be able to work in a daylight and night environment. Must be able to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations. Must be able to work outdoors in an extreme hot, cold, dry, or wet environment. Ability to lift, carry, drag, or push boxes or equipment up to 80 pounds. Ability to stoop, bend, stretch, twist, reach, kneel, squat, and balance. Must be able to get into and out of vehicle/heavy equipment. Must be capable of working under stressful situations including operation of equipment in bad weather or other difficult conditions. Regular, daily attendance is an essential function for this position and be willing to work overtime as required.
