SU26 Forestry Undergraduate Research Assistants (6) School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academic Affairs Tsaile Campus Diné
College STUDENT Employment Duty Schedule:
Flexible. Monday - Friday. 32-40hrs/wk.Summary/Objective of Position:
Up to six (6) Undergraduate Research Assistants will support the forestry health research project. UG Ras will assist with field and laboratory work, including sample collection, preparation, and analysis focused on forest health and ecosystem monitoring. They will also be trained in advanced field and molecular techniques such as assessing pinyon cores, needles, cones, and sap, as well as conducting DNA sequencing. This role gives UG RAs hands-on experience in environmental science, training in research methods, and opportunities to develop critical thinking skills. They will contribute to work that supports sustainable forest management and ecological resilience, while preparing for future careers or graduate study in STEM. Conduct advanced field and molecular techniques, including assessment of pinyon cores, needles, cones, sap, and DNA sequencing. Collect and handle samples in the field following safety protocols. Prepare, process, and record samples for laboratory analysis. Enter, organize, and perform basic analysis of project data. Maintain lab organization, equipment, and proper labeling. Collaborate with team members to meet project goals. Participate in meetings and trainings to build research skills. Follow ethical and professional standards in all activities.QUALIFICATIONS
EducationExperience Minimum:
Prior research experience, particularly in environmental science or laboratory settings.Preferred:
Familiarity with sample collection techniques, laboratory safety protocols, or data entry and analysis. Strong organizational and communication skills with attention to detail.Knowledge:
General knowledge of data entry and record-keeping practices. Familiarity with environmental challenges. Knowledge of workplace professionalism and teamwork in a research or laboratory setting. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and data management tools. Understanding of ethical research practices and the importance of data confidentiality.Skills:
Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, including sample handling, preparation, and processing. Ability to accurately follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain detailed and accurate records of activities and data. Competency in using laboratory equipment, such as pipettes, balances, and basic analytical tools. Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and presenting findings. Basic data entry and analysis skills using software such as Microsoft Excel or similar tools. Ability to perform physical tasks related to fieldwork, such as collecting and transporting samples.Abilities:
Apply scientific knowledge and technical skills in research tasks. Follow detailed instructions and maintain procedural accuracy. Work independently and collaboratively in team settings. Adapt to changing project needs and timelines. Ensure accuracy in data collection and record-keeping. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Perform fieldwork in various environmental conditions. Uphold ethical standards and maintain data confidentiality. Solve problems and overcome research challenges.Physical Requirements, Work EnvironmentTravel:
Ability to lift and carry equipment or samples weighing up to 25 pounds. Perform repetitive tasks, such as pipetting and sample preparation, for extended periods. Physical stamina to conduct fieldwork, including walking, standing, or bending for long periods in outdoor settings.
