ABOUT US
The Humane Society of Greater Miami (referred to as "Company") is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of animals in need. Our mission is to provide compassionate care, advocacy, and support for animals while educating the community about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Summer Camp Lead Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and educational experience for youth participating in the Company's summer camp program. This role guides campers through daily activities focused on animal welfare, kindness, empathy, pet care, safety, and humane education while maintaining a fun and inclusive environment. This role requires enthusiasm, strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to positively engage children of various ages in both classroom-style and hands-on learning experiences. This role is supported by the Director of Operations, a part-time Humane Educator, Volunteers, and Student Interns.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and engage groups of children during daily camp activities. Lead educational lessons, games, crafts, enrichment activities, and presentations related to animals and humane education. Ensure camper safety and always maintain appropriate behavior management. Assist with supervised animal interactions while adhering to all animal handling and youth safety protocols. Create a welcoming, inclusive, and positive environment for campers and families. Help set up, clean up, and organize camp materials and activity spaces. Maintain professionalism and represent the organization positively to the public. Assist with camper check-in/check-out procedures. Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and parents/guardians. Respond calmly and appropriately to incidents, emergencies, or behavioral concerns. Follow all organizational safety procedures and youth protection policies. Support daily operations and other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with children ages 6-12 in camps, classrooms, aftercare, youth programs, or related settings preferred. Strong communication, teamwork, and behavior management skills. Passion for animals and humane education. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Comfortable speaking to and supervising groups of children. Ability to remain patient, energetic, and adaptable throughout the day. Must be dependable, punctual, and professional. Basic knowledge of animal handling and safety is preferred. Must pass comprehensive background screening, including national criminal background check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Walking, standing, sitting for prolonged periods depending on the task. Occasional lifting and carrying office materials and animals (up to 50 pounds). Ability to work in environments where animals are present, with potential exposure to animal-related conditions and hazards.
