Summer Program Nurse - LVN or RN

Under the supervision of the Health Center Director, the licensed nurse is responsible for support in the operation of the IA summer program health center, performs nursing assessments and treats student and staff illness and injuries following the Nurse Practice Act, State laws, and IA Health Center Policy and Procedures. The nurse will provide nursing care for summer program participants aged 5-19 during the summer with a variety of health needs ranging from minor illnesses and injuries, to chronic illnesses such as asthma and diabetes. Minimum requirements are current state nursing licensure and two years clinical experience. Perform nursing assessments and treat illnesses and injuries of program participants and staff, including maintaining confidentiality, documenting, and notifying administration, staff, parents/ guardians, and/or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as appropriate. Administer medications to program participants according to physician and parent instructions; communicate with physicians and parents to obtain authorization forms; notify parents of prescription changes/refills, and communicate with the pharmacy as needed. Document health visits of participants and staff through electronic health records Respond to on-campus urgent and emergent situations Observe and report any unusual behavioral finding or unsafe program participant activity to program administrators. Remain with and give comfort to the ill or injured program participants until released to the dorm, administration, or the parent/guardian. Receive and review participant health files; communicate with parents and/or physicians' offices as needed to clarify or obtain information as needed. Review health records of all students, as assigned. Work as a team player and perform duties for members of the team. This includes but is not limited to clerical duties, obtaining meals for patients, cleaning a patient room, changing linens, etc. Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; dispose of biomedical waste and hazards according to established procedures; prepare and restock first aid kits for classrooms, dorm offices and field trips as assigned. Ensure medications are secured in medication safe and room. Seek the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. Comply with IA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of IA finances. Respect the culture, diversity and rights of all program participants and staff, their families and the community. Prioritize duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth. Assist with campus evacuation in the event of a wildfire emergency. Fulfill On-call hours as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Education:

Current Licensed Nurse in State of California (LVN or RN)

Experience:

Previous work in school setting, preferred but not required 2 years clinical experience preferred Good pediatric assessment skills, flexibility, the ability to work well with a team, and the ability to make independent decisions are essential.

Equipment Familiarity:

Windows OS, Google suite,

Gmail Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:

Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. Valid California Driver License and insurance. Current CPR certification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The Nurse should be able to perform assessments, make decisions about dispensing OTC medications per protocol, consult with providers as needed, and perform other duties as required to serve the population. Assess patients and make accurate nursing judgments Identify when need for additional treatment Monitor patients who spend night in Health Services Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and medical equipment.

Vision:

See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Specific vision abilities include close, distant and color vision perception and the ability to adjust eye focus.

Hearing:

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with frequent interruptions. For seasonal Summer Program operations, nursing staff will provide medications to students at designated times in designated spaces outside of the Campus Health Center.

SEASONAL STAFF RESIDENCY

Summer Seasonal Health Center staff are provided housing and are entitled to meals in the Nelson Dining Hall for the dates of employment, June 15 through July 28, 2026.
