Seasonal, Temporary Job Description:
The City of Livingston, Montana is seeking a spring and summer seasonal employee to work in the Public Works department supporting tasks in the Solid Waste Department. Solid Waste position assists with scale house operations as well as yard operations.
Expected Start Date Range:
The season typically lasts through late August to mid-September, (weather dependent).

Temporary Seasonal
  • Full-time 40 hours per week.
Regular shifts are Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. , and could include longer days, call back, or weekends, in the event of a special project or an emergency
Rate of Pay:
The compensation for this position is as follows: $20.00 per hour
  • First year summer seasonal $21.00 per hour
  • Second year consecutive returning summer seasonal $22.00 per hour
  • Third or more years consecutive returning summer seasonal
Benefits:
Two work t-shirts and one pair of leather work gloves provided at no cost to you. Seasonal employees accrue sick time and are eligible for pro-rated holiday pay depending on weekly hours worked.
Essential Functions:
  • Under general direction of Superintendents and Leads
  • Performs manual labor duties requiring ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and other equipment in a safe manner
  • Scale House operations include: o Taking proper weights and payments at the Scale House for residential and commercial customers o Maintaining appropriate records and receipts of fiscal transactions at the Transfer Station
  • Ability to use or learn to use backhoes, skid steers, and loaders
  • Safe dumping of refuse
  • Compacting trash from tipping floor to trailer
  • Maintaining site cleanliness and inspecting loads for unsafe materials
  • Assists with refuse pickup around solid waste yard
  • May occasionally operate small equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and chop saws
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, other government agencies, and the general public
  • Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive information pertaining to City residents or customers
  • High attention to detail with accuracy
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and as needed in the
Public Works Department Qualifications:
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED, preferred (required for open year-round, full-time applicants)
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver's License with an approved driving record
  • Must pass background checks Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal safety procedures
  • Must be able to establish and maintain a professional, respectful working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and other City employees
  • Must demonstrate punctuality and reliable and steady work attendance
  • This would be a plus, but is not a requirement: Possessing a Montana State CDL Class B license and meeting DOT physical and drug testing requirements

  • This work is considered medium to strenuous physical labor in nature and involves frequent walking, standing, climbing and climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, lifting, crouching, sitting, crawling, pushing, pulling, use of hands and/or fingers to carry, lift, handle, feel, reach, and repetitive motion, or standing virtually all of the time.
  • This work involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force or lifting on a regular basis. Occasionally lifting greater than 50 pounds with assistance.

Working Conditions:
This work has exposure to environmental weather conditions and temperature and is primarily performed outside. These conditions may include snow, ice, noise, bright or dim light and sunlight, wet and/or humid conditions, dust, pollen, smoke and other outdoor air situations. Hazards of the position could include working with moving parts of machinery, electricity, working in flowing water, and driving city vehicles.
