Job Description
The Supervisor of Transportation oversees the daily operations of the district's transportation department, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely student transportation. This role includes direct responsibility for dispatching buses, coordinating routes, and supervising drivers and transportation staff. Key Responsibilities Dispatch & Daily Operations Coordinate and dispatch school buses and drivers for daily routes, field trips, and extracurricular activities Monitor real-time route activity and respond to delays, breakdowns, or emergencies Maintain constant communication with drivers via radio or communication systems Adjust routes and assignments as needed due to absences, weather, or road conditions Supervision & Staff Management Supervise, support, and evaluate bus drivers and transportation personnel Assist with hiring, training, and scheduling staff Enforce district policies, safety regulations, and state transportation laws Address driver concerns, attendance, and performance issues Routing & Logistics Develop and maintain efficient bus routes and schedules Ensure compliance with student transportation requirements and safety standards Collaborate with school administrators on transportation needs (e.g., special education, athletics) Safety & Compliance Ensure all transportation operations meet federal, state, and local safety regulations Oversee accident response procedures and documentation Conduct or coordinate safety drills and training Maintain records for inspections, licensing, and certifications Communication & Customer Service Serve as the primary point of contact for transportation-related inquiries from parents, staff, and administrators Communicate route changes, delays, or emergencies in a timely manner Resolve complaints and concerns professionally Administrative Duties Maintain accurate records of routes, mileage, driver logs, and incidents Assist in budgeting, reporting, and transportation planning Utilize transportation management software and dispatch systems Qualifications High school diploma required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred Experience in transportation, logistics, or dispatching (school transportation preferred) Knowledge of routing systems and dispatch procedures Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills Ability to multitask and respond quickly in high-pressure situations Valid driver's license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain, depending on district requirements)
