Job Description

Work involves the performance of and/or directing others with the installation, maintenance, and repair of storage, distribution, and pumping facilities of the county water systems to assure efficient, reliable, and safe water delivery, treatment and storage. Position shall ensure the accurate reading of water meters and perform associated activities for meter/billing quality control. Duties and Responsibilities Performs and/or oversees the laying, installation and repair of water mains, service lines, hydrants, valves, fittings and meters. Locates, performs and/or oversees the tapping of water mains. Reviews and manages all field activities associated with meter reading, including, but not limited to, handheld management, meter repairs and replacement, route and walk sequence management and reviews meter reading performance of field personnel. Assigns and oversees the maintenance of distribution system facilities and rights of way within the system. Locates mains leaks and dispatches crews for repairs. Assists contractors working on the county water system. Performs the collection of water samples for regulation compliance, assures proper handling of water samples and trains field staff on sampling procedures. Requisitions and checks materials, supplies and equipment. Organizes and maintains the parts inventory. Answers customer questions and gathers information for complaints and billing disputes. In coordination with Assistant Superintendent, trains new field staff on various standard operating procedures and maintenance practices. Develops on-call schedule for 24/7 operations. Will coordinate and alternate with the Assistant Supervisor for after hours call outs for large water main repair activities or other emergency activities within the distribution system as required. Monitors the preventative maintenance activities for heavy equipment and vehicles assigned to Water Services. Coordinates the repair needs with the Assistant Superintendent. Drives necessary equipment to make repairs and meet the needs of the job. Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner. Performs all other duties assigned by supervision.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent. Five or more years of direct experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of water facilities. Valid driver's license. Willingness to work outdoors Willingness to work nonstandard hours and more than 40 hours per week if necessary. Willingness to work at multiple locations throughout Shelby County as needed.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Two or more years as crew leader in water operation activities. Water certification from the Alabama Department of Environmental Manager (ADEM) as a Grade II Water Operator (minimum). Certification as an operator will be a requirement for continued employment and must be achieved within 24 months of employment. May be required to obtain other certifications within the water industry. Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Continued employment will be contingent upon employee obtaining a CDL license within six months of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed outdoors and is subject to all weather conditions and odors.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is medium to heavy in nature and consists of driving a vehicle and equipment, walking on uneven terrain, standing for periods of 3- 6 hours when working on a critical water main leak, bending, pushing and pulling wrenches at various angles, carrying objects that weigh 20-50 or more pounds and climbing into and out of meter pits as needed for observations and maintenance work..
EXAMINATIONS
No written or performance examination will be required for this position. Applicants are screened and certified based on an evaluation of their education, training, experience and other requirements as outlined in this Position Announcement and denoted on their Job Application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire.
