JOB SUMMARY
Assists surgeons and other medical professionals in the hospital operating rooms and similar environments. Chiefly prepare patients, rooms, and equipment for pending surgical procedures. Also support during those procedures as part of a team of operating room professionals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
of this job description include but are not limited to: Set up and maintain surgical field, collaborating with nurses and doctors and assisting where required. Assemble, transport, and retrieve surgical equipment, ensuring all pieces leave the room. Keep all needed surgical equipment at the ready, including sterile linens, saline, lights, suction machines, etc. Inspect, maintain, decontaminate, and repair surgical equipment, keeping inventory records up to date. Conduct pre- and post-surgery patient care, including shaving, transporting, and applying dressings. Certified surgical technicians need to have knowledge of surgical instruments and operating procedures in order to anticipate the surgeon's needs. A surgical assistant also needs to keep up with new technologies and techniques to be as effective as possible. After surgery, a surgical technician generally transports a patient back to his or her room. He or she then returns to the OR to clean and prep for the next surgery. Communicates effectively with all levels of people. Functions as a contributing team member. Promotes positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community. Maintains competency and environment of care. Participates in performance improvement activities. Provides for patients'/significant others' rights and safety; strives to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal and regulatory standards. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and
EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma/GED required - Associate's Degree preferred Two-years of Orthopedic job experience preferred Certified Surgical Technician certification through approved certifying organization preferred Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions Average level of computer skills Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel often requiring exceptional courtesy and tact Analytical skills necessary to select the best sight for phlebotomy and process laboratory specimens Ability to prioritize according to the immediate needs of the laboratory and hospital Ability to pay close attention to detail Possesses good interpersonal skills, initiative, integrity, flexibility, adaptability, and must be a team player.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS /WORKING CONDITIONS
Standing, kneeling/squatting, pushing/pulling wheelchairs, stretchers, clients, furniture, and equipment, reaching, carrying, and should be able to lift 25 plus pounds using proper lifting techniques. Employees may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and the potential for physical harm. Clients who are confused or combative may increase the likelihood for this potential. The event of a physical plant hazard could increase the risk as well. Must be able to deal with the day-to-day routine stress caused by working with ill patients, anxious families, physicians, and other health care providers. May be able to deal with stress caused by emergency or critical situations when the need arises. May be exposed to unpleasant odors at any time.
