Job Title:
Survey Crew ChiefJob Description This role leads field survey operations for a wide range of projects, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, subdivision, and construction stakeout surveys. You will focus initially on topographic and construction staking work, with some boundary surveying primarily for determining rights-of-way rather than completing certified surveys. The position combines hands-on field surveying, survey calculations, and data management, while supporting project planning, budgeting, and client coordination across municipal, commercial, industrial, and utility projects in Southeast Michigan. Responsibilities Lead and perform various types of surveying, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, subdivision, and construction stakeouts. Focus on topographic and construction staking projects, with boundary work primarily to determine rights-of-way rather than prepare certified surveys. Perform a wide range of survey calculations to support layout, staking, and mapping activities. Interpret, verify, and validate the accuracy of survey data, including field measurements and calculations. Assist with the preparation, organization, and maintenance of all survey data, charts, plots, maps, records, and related documents. Research and review legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain property information needed for survey work. Assist with writing clear and accurate descriptions of surveys for use in deeds, leases, and other legal documents. Monitor and help maintain survey equipment and supplies, ensuring tools and instruments are in proper working order. Assist in reviewing the scope, budget, and schedule for new project tasks, providing input on field requirements and constraints. Monitor task budgets and progress, helping to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget. Conduct on-site inspections as needed to verify conditions, confirm survey control, and support project needs. Prepare project status updates and other reports to communicate progress and findings to project teams and stakeholders. Assist with the preparation of proposals, including technical input related to surveying and construction layout. Support Project Managers by providing field insights, data, and recommendations throughout the project lifecycle. Attend client, public, project, and staff meetings, including client progress meetings, plan reviews, and pre-construction meetings. Travel to project sites across Southeast Michigan, particularly within driving distance of Detroit and Ann Arbor. Work primarily in the field for the majority of the day, adapting to varying site conditions and project types. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience in surveying. Hands-on construction staking experience for a variety of project types. Construction layout experience, including setting out structures, utilities, and site features. Experience with boundary surveys and understanding of boundary principles. Experience with topographic surveys and preparation of topo data for design use. Proficiency with Trimble survey equipment, including Total Stations, GPS, and laser scanners. Proficiency with Trimble Access software for data collection and field workflows. Ability to interpret and verify survey data, measurements, and calculations with a high level of accuracy. Experience preparing and working with survey data, maps, charts, and related documentation. Ability to research legal and survey records and interpret land titles for property information. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing survey data and records. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Ability to work flexible hours Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays, typically totaling 40-50 hours per week. Willingness to travel to project sites throughout Southeast Michigan. Additional Skills & Qualifications 7 or more years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief is a plus. Experience using Trimble Business Center software. Experience with Civil 3D for processing survey data and supporting design workflows. Laser scanning experience, including field operation and data handling. Familiarity with boundary survey software and land development workflows. Experience working on projects for transportation agencies such as MDOT. Experience with municipal, commercial, industrial, and utility (e.g., DTE/Consumers) projects. Strong communication skills for collaborating with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to contribute to proposal development and project planning. Interest in leveraging new technologies and tools to improve survey efficiency and accuracy. Work Environment This position is primarily field-based, with the majority of each day spent on active project sites across Southeast Michigan, especially within driving distance of Detroit and Ann Arbor. You will work in a variety of environments, including municipal, commercial, industrial, and utility project locations, and must be comfortable working in all types of weather conditions. Typical hours are Monday through Friday with flexible scheduling, plus occasional Saturdays, totaling approximately 40-50 hours per week. The role uses modern surveying technologies, including Trimble Total Stations, GPS, laser scanners, Trimble Access, and related survey and land development software such as Trimble Business Center and Civil 3D. A work truck will be provided when available, and a monthly cell phone allowance is offered.
