Job Description

About the Position This position purpose is to ensure that his/her crews achieve the targets established by management for both the Chemical and Physical Testing Laboratories. The team lead assists the team members to perform at their full potential. This person has the responsibility for ensuring the safety, productivity, and efficiency in the labs on a daily basis. The position follows standard operating procedures, and practices safe work habits, to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible. This position requires both working in an operational, hands-on capacity, as well as working in a maintenance capacity, and assists with administrative duties in the labs when assigned. Main Responsibilities Provide leadership for both the Chemical and Physical Testing Laboratories on a daily basis, and is a role model to set an example for laboratory employees to follow. Follows the laboratory standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP's), and makes suggestions for improvement to procedures where applicable. Assists in the operation and maintenance of sample preparation and machining equipment (band saws, grinders, CNC machining centers, etc.) as needed. Assists in the operation of testing equipment (OES, Leco, tensile, charpy, etc.) as needed. Assist in the training of new hires and cross-training of all laboratory personnel in all job functions . Ensures daily housekeeping is performed, that the proper PPE is available, and follows up with other safety deliverables in both the Chemical and Physical Testing Laboratories. Ensures that all required testing during the shift is being completed and results are reported on a timely basis. Monitor test results for accuracy on shift and report on testing failures when necessary . Verify data recorded on forms is legible, accurate, and is entered correctly in the test tracking system and spreadsheets/databases. Ensure that all laboratory equipment is operating properly. Supervise the routine preventative maintenance activities and make sure maintenance is performed on equipment, including regular validation checks/routines. Provide support for troubleshooting and assist in returning faulty equipment to operational status as directed. Answer calls on technical questions or concerns from Laboratory personnel on off-hours when contacted.
Education, Experience, and Competencies Required:
High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE MO level in both the Chemical and Physical Testing Laboratories. Experience with computers (basic computer skills
  • Microsoft Office, Word, Excel).
Ability to multi-task and work under pressure, while maintaining composure and professionalism. Ability to work in a team environment, and to carry out assignments to completion while following standard operating practices. Detail oriented and a high level of accuracy. Ability to handle a fast pace work environment with low margin of error. Good verbal and written communication skills. Possess effective decision-making skills. Ability to interpret industry specifications (ASTM/EN/API/ABS/CSA) Regular and reliable attendance
Preferred:
Understanding of the theoretical and mechanical aspects of equipment in Chemical and Physical testing laboratories. Associates or Bachelors degree in chemistry, metallurgy, materials or other related field Knowledge of steel industry Chemical and Physical Laboratory test preparation and testing techniques, and related equipment Knowledge of CNC programming or previous experience with CNC machining, cutting, and milling equipment Thorough knowledge of ASTM testing standards or other industry specifications (EN/API/ABS/CSA) Position Type
