33957 ALA accredited Masters required: No Under the direction of the Assistant Director, the Technical Services Specialist oversees the management and maintenance of the Integrated Library System (ILS). This position plays a key role in the organization and accessibility of library resources through accurate and efficient cataloging of materials in multiple formats and through ongoing catalog maintenance. This position is also responsible for receiving library materials and works closely with vendors and library staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the Assistant Director to manage the Integrated Library System (ILS). Oversee upgrades to Library catalog and TLC LS2 integrated library system software; train new staff in cataloging interfaces and provide guidance when difficult questions or issues arise. Recommend service-related policies, implementation plans, and assessments. Perform copy cataloging and descriptive/original cataloging and coding of library materials in multiple formats (including non-traditional objects) using MARC, RDA, and other metadata standards. Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and discoverability of bibliographic records in the library's catalog, including On Order records. Regularly perform catalog maintenance by generating and analyzing reports using LS2 and vendor supplied data, including editing call numbers, subject headings, and collection assignments for bibliographic and item records in the ILS to ensure accurate representation according to national rules and standards. Maintain settings for users, patrons, lending rules, etc. Maintain the accuracy of holdings/records in OCLC to support Interlibrary Loan service. Update Worldshare holdings based off of attached MARC record data when new titles are cataloged. When data is not available, perform advanced searches to find matching records. Update outdated/incomplete internal bibliographic records in OCLC as time permits. Maintain contact with OCLC representatives for staff login and settings. Compile and maintain cataloging statistics. Prepare usage reports to support collection maintenance and decision-making efforts. Assist with collection projects, including periodic inventorying of Library materials. Order and manage inventory of cataloging-related supplies. Manage the 'Library of Things' collections in collaboration with Collection Development Librarian and Circulation Coordinator. Receive, verify, and sort collection materials ordered to ensure timely and accurate processing. Monitor acquisitions workflow issues such as item cancellations or receiving damaged items and work with vendors to resolve them in a timely manner. May perform detailed step-by-step procedures in processing materials, including securing book jackets, affixing bar codes, and generating author, title, and classification labels. May staff public service desks, assisting a diverse audience of library users in locating and selecting materials, and with a variety of resources. Keep Supervisor and/or Library Director up to date on any problems, concerns, etc. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Education/Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification system and Library of Congress Subject headings. Demonstrates knowledge of current cataloging standards (RDA, MARC, LCSH) and classification systems (LC). Demonstrates an in-depth working knowledge of Library system/catalog, software applications and computers to assist staff in providing service. Ability to proofread with accuracy. Stays current with developments in cataloging and metadata standards. Knowledge of Sanibel Public Library District's policies and procedures and ability to follow them. Ability to act as an ambassador of the Library by promoting its mission and vision. Demonstrates ability to effectively use applications software, including Microsoft 365, Word, and Outlook, along with standard office equipment. Demonstrates excellent planning and organizational skills; self-motivated, evidence of professional initiative, creativity, and flexibility. Completes tasks in a timely manner, meets deadlines. Able to do highly detailed, accurate work. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to both lead and work cooperatively as part of a team. Knowledge of current public library principles, methods, practices, and trends. Has regular on-time attendance.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field. Copy cataloging or metadata experience. Two years of related library experience or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience. Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science or a closely related field from a graduate library school program accredited by the American Library Association. Two years of original and/or copy cataloging experience. Proficiency in OCLC Record Manager (previously Connexion), MarcEdit, LS2 ILS, and/or other cataloging applications. Experience with TLC LS2 and OCLC WorldShare Management Services. Experience creating procedure guides for public and staff use. Experience administering a budget. Knowledge of and experience in utilizing integrated library systems. Proficient with downloading and streaming services such as Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy. Experience with library collection development practices, including materials selection. Exhibit a commitment to continuing education through regional and national library interest groups and associations; attend professional development conferences.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
This position includes the following essential functions that qualified individuals must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation: Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to provide instruction and support to diverse audiences. Apply analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to resolve technical issues. Move throughout the library facility to assist patrons and access equipment. Maintain stationary position at service desk or computer workstation for periods of up to 4 hours. Occasionally lift, move, or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds. Operate computers and standard office equipment. Exercise sound judgment in interpreting and implementing library policies and procedures. Work collaboratively as part of a team and interact effectively with the public.
