Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Artificial Intelligence (AI) Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical leadership, strategic guidance, and hands-on support for enterprise AI initiatives supporting the National Weather Service (NWS). The selected candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to government stakeholders, helping advance AI capabilities through technical consultation, solution development, program management, and stakeholder engagement. This role requires expertise in AI/ML technologies, systems architecture, emerging AI trends, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business solutions.
Duties:
AI Strategy & Program Support Provide expert technical guidance to support NWS AI priorities, initiatives, and enterprise modernization efforts. Collaborate with government stakeholders to identify opportunities for AI-enabled solutions that improve mission effectiveness and operational efficiency. Support the development and execution of AI strategies, roadmaps, policies, and governance frameworks. Assess emerging AI technologies and recommend innovative applications aligned with organizational objectives. Requirements Analysis & Project Management Translate complex business needs, operational challenges, and user feedback into technical requirements and AI solution strategies. Manage AI project lifecycles from concept through implementation, ensuring alignment with mission objectives, schedule, budget, and performance requirements. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and leadership to ensure successful project execution. Technical Consultation & Architecture Provides expert guidance to development teams on AI architectural design, model selection, and the implementation of best practices, including testing and maintenance. Conducts rigorous technical reviews of proposed and ongoing AI projects to assess feasibility, security, performance standards, and risk. Identifies potential technical bottlenecks and ethical considerations in AI workflows and recommends proactive solutions to timely and responsible delivery. AI Solution Development Leads the end-to-end development of AI projects for NWS enterprise priorities that do not have a development team, ensuring they are built for production-grade reliability and scalability. Supports the development of proof-of-concepts to test emerging AI technologies and their potential application within the enterprise. Executive Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Present technical findings, recommendations, and project updates to executive leadership and non-technical stakeholders. Translate complex AI concepts, model performance metrics, and technical risks into clear business impacts and actionable recommendations. Develop reports, briefings, white papers, and presentations communicating current AI capabilities, program progress, and future opportunities. Facilitate collaboration among technical and business teams to ensure alignment and shared understanding of project objectives. Collaborate with government stakeholders to identify opportunities for AI-enabled solutions that improve mission effectiveness and operational efficiency. Support the development and execution of AI strategies, roadmaps, policies, and governance frameworks. Assess emerging AI technologies and recommend innovative applications aligned with organizational objectives.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Mathematics, or related technical field. 10+ years of professional experience supporting advanced technology, analytics, software development, or AI/ML initiatives. Demonstrated experience leading AI/ML projects from concept through deployment. Strong understanding of machine learning, generative AI, large language models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), and data science methodologies. Experience evaluating and implementing AI governance, security, and ethical AI practices. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage technical and executive audiences. Ability to obtain and maintain required government clearances (if applicable).
Pay:
$86,630.16 - $104,328.80 per year
