Job Description

About This Role This is a brand-new position — and an uncommon one. We are a civil engineering firm that designs infrastructure, manages stormwater systems, and delivers complex projects for our clients. We believe artificial intelligence has the potential to change how we work, but we haven't fully explored what that looks like yet. That exploration is this job. We're looking for someone who is genuinely excited about the intersection of AI and engineering practice, and who has the initiative to define the value of their own role. The impact of this position will be largely shaped by the person who fills it. If you are self-directed, curious, and technically capable, this role offers a rare opportunity to build something from the ground up inside an established firm. What You'll Be Working On Your work will span three primary areas: AutoCAD Civil 3D & Design Workflow Investigate how AI tools can integrate with Civil 3D to accelerate design tasks such as grading, corridor modeling, and plan sheet production Identify automation opportunities for repetitive drafting and documentation tasks Prototype and test AI-assisted workflows, then document findings and recommendations for the broader team Stormwater & Drainage Calculations Explore whether and how AI can assist with hydrologic and hydraulic calculations Evaluate AI-assisted tools against our existing methods for accuracy, speed, and reliability Collaborate with project engineers to identify calculation workflows where AI could provide meaningful time savings Company Operations Assess how AI tools can support firm-wide operations including project management, report writing, proposal development, and client communication Stay current on emerging AI tools relevant to civil engineering and present findings to leadership Develop internal guidelines and training materials as new tools are adopted What We're Looking For Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field Hands-on experience with AI/ML tools, large language models, or automation frameworks — whether through coursework, personal projects, or internships Strong programming skills, particularly in Python; experience with scripting, APIs, or workflow automation is a plus Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable operating in areas without clear answers or established processes Ability to work independently and take initiative — this role requires someone who can define their own priorities and drive progress without close supervision Clear written and verbal communication skills; you will be translating technical findings into practical recommendations for engineering staff and leadership General Expectations We want to be transparent: this role is exploratory by nature. We believe there is real value to be unlocked — but we don't know exactly where it is yet. The right candidate will be energized by that ambiguity, not frustrated by it. You will have access to leadership, real projects, and the freedom to experiment. What you make of this position is genuinely up to you. We are investing in someone who will take ownership and show us what's possible. Apex Civil Engineering is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
