About DSI Dominion Sciences Initiative, LLC (DSI) is a growing Maryland-based founded and led by experienced federal biomedical scientists and program leaders. DSI supports genomics and bioinformatics, infectious-disease diagnostics, biosurveillance, advanced sensing, clinical research, CBRNE technologies, and federal scientific programs. We are building a technical team to support infectious-disease genomics and bioinformatics research at Fort Detrick. The Position DSI is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst/Engineer with strong applied experience in genomics, computational biology, and next-generation sequencing. You will develop and apply bioinformatics methods supporting pathogen discovery, genomic characterization, biosurveillance, environmental and wastewater surveillance, and fieldable bioinformatics. The work may involve human, microbial, vector, animal, and environmental samples. Responsibilities Develop, maintain, validate, and improve bioinformatics pipelines for genomic and metagenomic sequence analysis. Analyze NGS data for pathogen identification, characterization, comparative genomics, and surveillance. Support genome assembly and annotation, taxonomic profiling, phylogenetic analysis, molecular epidemiology, and pathogen discovery. Evaluate genomic variation relevant to pathogen identification, evolution, resistance, virulence, and surveillance. Support reference-sequence development and probe, primer, and genomic-target assessment. Develop analytical tools using Python, R, Perl, Java, or comparable languages. Work with sequencing data from platforms such as Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, and PacBio. Evaluate and benchmark analytical pipelines, databases, bioinformatics software, and fieldable computational methods. Support sequencing-based surveillance involving clinical, respiratory, enteric, environmental, wastewater, vector, and animal samples. Prepare technical documentation, reports, presentations, and research products. Collaborate with molecular biologists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, laboratory scientists, and Government researchers. Provide analytical reach-back, training, or field support when required. Required Qualifications Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science with substantial biological/bioinformatics training, or a closely related field. At least five years of hands-on bioinformatics experience. Demonstrated applied experience in computer science, genomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Programming experience in Python and/or R and experience with languages such as Perl or Java. Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data. Familiarity with major NGS platforms, including one or more Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, or PacBio systems. Strong analytical, scientific communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment. Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally, including occasional assignments of approximately two to four weeks. U.S. citizenship and ability to satisfy applicable Government security and access requirements. Preferred Qualifications Experience with infectious-disease or microbial genomics, metagenomics, whole-genome sequencing, pathogen discovery, biosurveillance, molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial-resistance genomics, environmental or wastewater surveillance, workflow-management systems such as Nextflow or Snakemake, HPC/cloud computing, single-cell sequencing, fieldable bioinformatics, or DoD/federal laboratory research is particularly relevant. An active security clearance is advantageous but is not required if the candidate otherwise satisfies the position's eligibility requirements. Compensation and Benefits The anticipated salary range is $100,000-$135,000 annually , based on experience, qualifications, and final contract requirements. DSI intends to provide full-time employees with employer-subsidized medical coverage, access to dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, paid time off, paid holidays, and required workers' compensation coverage. Final benefit terms, employer contributions, eligibility requirements, and effective dates will be provided with any contingent offer. No bonus, commission, equity, or other variable compensation is currently anticipated.
