Job Description

About DSI Dominion Sciences Initiative, LLC (DSI) is a growing Maryland-based founded and led by experienced federal biomedical scientists and program leaders. DSI supports genomics and bioinformatics, infectious-disease diagnostics, biosurveillance, advanced sensing, clinical research, CBRNE technologies, and federal scientific programs. We are building a technical team to support infectious-disease genomics and bioinformatics research at Fort Detrick. The Position DSI is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Analyst/Engineer to develop and apply computational methods supporting infectious-disease genomics, pathogen surveillance, emerging-threat response, and fieldable bioinformatics. You will work across scientific and software disciplines to analyze complex NGS datasets, develop and validate automated workflows, improve analytical methods, and help translate bioinformatics capabilities from research environments into operational use. Responsibilities Lead analysis of genomic and metagenomic sequencing data from pathogens, near-neighbors, bacteriophages, clinical specimens, and environmental samples. Develop, validate, maintain, and optimize automated bioinformatics pipelines. Perform genome assembly, annotation, taxonomic profiling, comparative genomics, phylogenetic analysis, and molecular epidemiology. Support pathogen discovery, genomic characterization, biosurveillance, and epidemic/pandemic response. Analyze whole-genome sequencing data generated using shotgun, amplicon, enrichment, and other sequencing approaches. Evaluate sequence variation relevant to pathogen identification, evolution, resistance, virulence, and surveillance. Support development and evaluation of probes, primers, reference sequences, comparator databases, and other genomic resources. Develop analytical tools using Python, R, Perl, Java, or comparable programming languages. Work with sequencing data generated using Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, and other sequencing technologies. Develop and benchmark reproducible analytical workflows and evaluate bioinformatics software, databases, and computational methods. Apply appropriate software-development practices, including version control, documentation, testing, and quality assurance. Support high-performance, cloud, or other computational environments as appropriate. Contribute to development and evaluation of fieldable bioinformatics capabilities. Prepare user documentation, technical reports, research products, presentations, and training materials. Provide technical guidance to other analysts, laboratory scientists, and research personnel as appropriate. Collaborate with Government scientists, domestic and international laboratories, epidemiologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, and other multidisciplinary research personnel. Support field demonstrations, training, and analytical reach-back when required. Required Qualifications Master's degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science with substantial biological or bioinformatics experience, or a closely related discipline. At least seven years of hands-on bioinformatics experience. Demonstrated applied, multiyear experience in computer science, genomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Expert programming capability in Python and/or R, with experience in additional languages such as Perl or Java. Significant experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data. Familiarity with sequencing platforms such as Illumina MiSeq, NextSeq, NovaSeq, iSeq or MiniSeq; Oxford Nanopore MinION or GridION; and/or PacBio systems. Demonstrated ability to develop, validate, or maintain reproducible analytical pipelines. Strong scientific communication, documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently, manage technical priorities, and perform effectively under deadlines. Ability to work collaboratively with laboratory scientists and multidisciplinary research teams. Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally, including occasional assignments of approximately two to four weeks and work in potentially austere environments. U.S. citizenship and ability to satisfy applicable Government security and access requirements. Preferred Qualifications Experience in several of the following areas is particularly relevant: Infectious-disease or microbial genomics Metagenomics Pathogen discovery Whole-genome sequencing Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetics Environmental or wastewater surveillance Antimicrobial-resistance genomics Viral, bacterial, or other emerging-pathogen characterization Workflow systems such as Nextflow, Snakemake, WDL/Cromwell, or comparable tools Git and modern software-development practices High-performance or cloud computing Containers such as Docker or Singularity/Apptainer AI or machine-learning applications in biological sequence analysis Single-cell sequencing or microarray analysis Field-deployable sequencing or bioinformatics Development of scientific software, user interfaces, or automated analytical pipelines DoD, Navy Medicine, public-health, or other federal research programs An active security clearance is advantageous but is not required if the candidate otherwise satisfies the position's eligibility requirements. Why Join DSI DSI offers experienced bioinformaticians the opportunity to help build a growing scientific company rather than simply occupy a position within an established organization. You will work directly with experienced scientific and program leadership and have substantial visibility into the technical work. A strong Senior Bioinformatics Analyst/Engineer can help shape DSI's bioinformatics capabilities, analytical practices, recruiting, technical strategy, and future research directions. As DSI grows, this position can provide a path toward greater technical and program leadership, including opportunities to lead analytical efforts, mentor other scientists and analysts, contribute to proposals and internal R&D, and potentially serve in technical-lead or program-lead roles on future efforts. DSI's work extends beyond a single contract. Our broader activities span pathogen genomics, CRISPR-based diagnostics, infectious-disease surveillance, environmental and wastewater sensing, clinical research, advanced biosensors, CBRNE technologies, and other biomedical R&D. We are building a small team of experienced professionals who value scientific rigor, practical problem solving, direct communication, and the ability to move good ideas forward without unnecessary organizational layers. Compensation and Benefits The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,000-$155,000 annually , based on experience, qualifications, and final contract requirements. DSI intends to provide full-time employees with employer-subsidized medical coverage, access to dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, paid time off, paid holidays, and required workers' compensation coverage. Final benefit terms, employer contribution levels, eligibility requirements, and effective dates will be provided with any contingent offer of employment. No bonus, commission, equity, or other variable compensation is currently anticipated for this position. Application Please submit a current resume describing your bioinformatics, genomics, software-development, and NGS experience.
Candidates should clearly identify:
Programming languages and analytical tools Bioinformatics pipelines and workflow-management systems Sequencing platforms and technologies Infectious-disease, microbial-genomics, or pathogen-surveillance experience Experience developing or maintaining scientific software or automated analytical workflows U.S. citizenship Current security clearance or background-investigation status, if applicable Availability for primarily on-site work at Fort Detrick Ability and willingness to support national and international travel This position is contingent upon contract award, award of the applicable subcontract to DSI, Government approval where required, and successful completion of applicable security, credentialing, and onboarding requirements.
