The focus is on:
Building a sustainable, ongoing process to manage technology life cycle (e.g., Windows 2012/2016/2019/22, SQL, Oracle, Linux, etc.) Driving accountability and visibility across application owners and business stakeholders Reducing reliance on extended support (e.g., current spend on extended support for Windows 2016) Enabling leadership to understand risk, cost, and timelines for remediation and upgrades Key Responsibilities 1. Establish and maintain the life cycle program Design and stand up a repeatable, sustainable process to manage OS and database life cycles across the environment. Define and refine the data model and criteria needed to understand life cycle status (e.g., current version, compatibility with future OS versions, vendor constraints, budget implications). Ensure the program can be reused for future cycles (e.g., when Windows 2019 is retired, then 2022, etc.). 2. Inventory and data gathering Work with multiple teams to compile and validate inventories of: Applications Servers / OS versions Databases (SQL, Oracle, etc.) Vendors and owners / key contacts Leverage existing data sources (e.g., older Excel inventories, vCenter, other internal inventories) as starting points, then: Perform sanity checks and confirm what is still accurate. Identify gaps where ownership has changed or data is stale due to reorgs. 3. Application & vendor engagement Force structured decisions from application teams and vendors, such as: Is the current version compatible with the target OS/database version (e.g., Windows 22 / 25)? If not, does the application have upgrade rights, or is a new license purchase required? What is the planned timeline (e.g., Q3 2026) to upgrade or migrate? Drive professional but firm follow-up with application owners who do not respond, escalating when necessary. 4 . Analysis, reporting, and dashboards Build and maintain dashboards and reports showing: Total population (e.g., number of applications / servers by OS version) Which are good to go vs. blocked Which require upgrades, new licenses, or vendor involvement Planned vs. actual completion dates by team / owner Items needing exceptions (e.g., never upgrading, requiring segmentation) Tools could include Excel (pivot tables & charts), Power BI, or Tableau, depending on skillset and internal tooling. 5. Accountability and escalation Clear attribution when delays are caused Provide leadership with transparent views so decisions (e.g., exceptions, extended support spend) are made with full context.
