Start Date:
ASAP About Axiom Learning Axiom Learning is a mission-driven EdTech SaaS company building digital products that help K-12 students develop foundational learning skills — like executive functioning and self-regulation — that most education tools overlook. Our approach is grounded in years of research in cognitive science and neuroscience, translated into assessments, curricula, professional development platforms, and consumer-facing learning products that serve school districts nationwide. We're growing quickly, which means new technical challenges across the stack and a lot of room to build. Position Summary We are seeking a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead Axiom's engineering, product, infrastructure, and security strategy. This role blends product vision with operational discipline. The CTO will shape our technical roadmap, guide engineering execution, and establish the security and compliance standards required to protect student data and support scalable growth. You will build and lead the engineering function — currently a small, senior team — and be expected to contribute directly to the codebase alongside setting architecture and infrastructure direction. You will serve as both strategic architect and operational leader — partnering directly with the CEO and leadership team to align what we build with where the business is going. What You'll Do Define and execute the company's long-term technology and product strategy Partner with leadership to align product roadmap with business growth Build, mentor, and lead the engineering team — setting the bar for standards, architecture, and execution Oversee cloud infrastructure and guide decisions on stack evolution as we scale Own security posture across the organization, including secure development practices, identity and access management, and ensuring the right internal systems and tooling are in place to support a growing team Lead SOC 2 and FERPA compliance efforts and formalize processes to support district-level security reviews Ensure our products integrate cleanly into the school district technical ecosystem (Clever, ClassLink, SIS systems)
Requirements:
Qualifications Required:
7+ years in software engineering or technical leadership 3+ years leading engineering teams or functions Experience shipping and scaling SaaS products Strong cloud infrastructure knowledge (AWS, GCP, or Azure) Experience implementing secure development practices Familiarity with FERPA or student data privacy requirements Experience thinking strategically about product direction, not just engineering execution Nice to Have (but not required): Experience in EdTech or K-12 environments Experience scaling early-stage startups (this is a strong fit for a first-time CTO with senior engineering leadership experience) Familiarity with SOC 2 or similar compliance frameworks Experience leading both product and infrastructure initiatives What You'll Gain A true CTO seat at a company with real revenue, proven product-market fit, and a Gates Foundation-validated evidence base - not a speculative startup Ownership over both product direction and security posture The opportunity to build the engineering function from early growth through scale Direct partnership with the CEO and founding team The chance to shape how technology supports student learning across thousands of schools
