Building Automation Controls Engineer (Siemens Focus) Job Description This role focuses on programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting Building Automation Systems with a strong emphasis on Siemens platforms, while also working with Niagara, Open+, and other building automation technologies. The position combines deep technical expertise in HVAC and control systems with a customer-first mindset, independent field execution, and close collaboration with Operations, Service, and Engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions and long-term value for customers. Responsibilities Program, commission, and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems, with a primary focus on Siemens-based platforms and additional work on Niagara, Open+, and other building automation technologies. Configure, test, and validate building automation and control sequences to ensure optimal performance of HVAC and related building systems. Review, interpret, and work from construction drawings, blueprints, schematics, and project documentation to design and implement control solutions. Support panel design, panel board layouts, and integration of field devices, sensors, and controllers into building automation systems. Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, low-voltage control components, and direct digital controls (DDC) in the field to resolve issues efficiently. Perform in-office engineering and programming work, including creating, modifying, and validating control programs and graphics using building automation and drawing software. Manage multiple projects simultaneously, plan work effectively, and execute tasks within budgeted labor hours from commissioning through project close-out. Coordinate closely with Operations, Service, and Engineering teams to ensure smooth project execution and timely resolution of technical challenges. Provide professional, customer-facing support, including status updates, technical explanations, and recommendations to building owners and facility teams. Build and maintain long-term relationships with existing customers by delivering high-quality service and reliable technical solutions. Lead owner training sessions to educate end users on system operation, capabilities, and best practices for their building automation systems. Mentor and support junior technicians by sharing technical knowledge, best practices, and guidance on project execution and customer interaction. Assist with validation and testing of building systems, including HVAC equipment, airflow, hydronic systems, and related controls. Apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios when performing calculations related to system design and commissioning. Travel occasionally to job sites to support project execution, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer meetings, while maintaining a primary focus on in-office engineering and programming work. Essential Skills Minimum of 5 years of experience in the controls or construction industry. Deep, hands-on experience programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting Building Automation Systems, especially Siemens platforms. Working knowledge of Niagara, Open+, and related building automation systems. Strong expertise in HVAC systems, including airflow, hydronic systems, and HVAC equipment. Proficiency with direct digital controls (DDC) and low-voltage control systems. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage control components in the field. Experience with building automation and controls programming, particularly Siemens-centric solutions. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and project documentation. Proficiency using drawing software and tools to review or support the creation of control and panel drawings. Working knowledge of refrigeration machinery and related tools. Proven ability to work independently without direct supervision and execute field work effectively. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work within budgeted labor hours. Strong customer service mindset and professional communication skills in client-facing situations. Ability to lead owner training sessions and clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Capability to mentor junior technicians and provide guidance on technical and project-related tasks. Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios. Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in HVAC or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with building systems, building automation, and building automation software. Familiarity with programmable logic concepts and programming languages used in building automation. Experience with panel design, panel boards, and integration of fire alarm and other building systems where applicable. Experience in controls engineering, controls design, and the use of CAD or drawing tools for control system layouts. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when reviewing designs, documentation, and programming. Ability to collaborate effectively with Operations, Service, and Engineering teams in a project-driven environment. Interest in continuous learning and professional development in building automation, HVAC, and control technologies. Work Environment You will spend the majority of your time working in an office environment at a desk, reviewing blueprints and schematics, programming, and testing controls equipment using building automation software, drawing tools, and related engineering applications.
