Job Summary The Michigan Kidney Translational Medicine Center (MiKTMC) is seeking a skilled undergraduate student intern for a targeted, 6-month temporary engagement. This individual will support research data management and computing activities to the Software Team and Bioinformatics Team. The primary focus of this role is to work closely with the software, data management, and bioinformatics teams to ensure data is accurately loaded, structured, and maintained to support internal research workflows. This position offers hands-on experience with research data systems, Linux-based environments, and data infrastructure tools. Responsibilities• Data Ingestion & Platform Support (50%)
Arvados Platform Ingestion:
Assist with loading, organizing, and cataloging complex internal research datasets into the Arvados secure data platform.
Data Validation:
Validate data integrity, structure, and completeness during the ingestion process to ensure consistency before integration. Environment & Workflow Management (30%)
Command-Line Operations:
Manage, navigate, and manipulate large research data files using Linux/Unix command-line tools.
Containerized Workflows:
Support and maintain data workflows utilizing containerized Docker environments. Collaboration & Documentation (20%)
Team Ingestion Support:
Collaborate with software, data management, and bioinformatics team members to troubleshoot data formatting and ingestion errors.
Technical Documentation:
Document data workflows, system usage processes, and ingestion protocols to maintain institutional knowledge. Required Qualifications•
Education:
Current undergraduate student (typically a rising junior or senior) in computer science, data science, bioinformatics, information science, or a related technical field.
Technical Environment:
Demonstrated confidence working in a Linux/Unix command-line environment.
Tools and Databases:
Experience with Docker or other container technologies, and familiarity with PostgreSQL or other relational databases (e.g., basic querying).
Execution:
Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow structured technical workflows accurately. Desired Qualifications• Exposure to cloud-based or distributed computing environments. Comfort working with web-based data platforms or interfaces. Interest in research computing, data infrastructure, or biomedical data. Strong problem-solving skills. Why Join Michigan Medicine?
