This is hands-on field IT—not a remote help-desk, sales, or office position. You will travel to commercial locations throughout your regional market to install, troubleshoot, replace, and document business technology. CookTech is a technician-owned Florida field-services company founded in Jacksonville in 2000. We support MSPs, integrators, and enterprise partners across retail, restaurant, healthcare, telecom, office, and other commercial environments. The primary opportunity advertised here is for W-9 independent contractors. W-2 field positions are also available in select markets. What You'll Work On Assignments may include: Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A cabling Switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points Racks, patch panels, and network closets POS systems, kiosks, printers, scanners, and computers VoIP phones and PBX cutovers Conference-room equipment, A/V systems, and digital signage Smart-hands support for remote engineers Hardware refreshes, break-fix calls, and equipment replacements New-store openings, decommissions, and multi-site rollouts Responsibilities Review each work order and scope before traveling Arrive on time with the required tools and equipment Check in with dispatch, the project manager, and the site contact Perform installations, repairs, replacements, and troubleshooting according to the scope Test and verify all completed work Escalate problems promptly instead of guessing or working outside the approved scope Protect client equipment, information, and work areas Maintain a professional appearance and communicate clearly on-site Photograph completed work and record serial numbers, asset tags, cable-test results, and other required information Obtain required acceptance or signoff Complete all required closeout documentation before leaving the site Coordinate equipment returns, parts, and approved overages when required What Makes a Strong Candidate You do not need experience with every system we service. Strong candidates can independently perform several of the following: Pull, terminate, label, and test network cable Install or replace switches, access points, routers, and other network equipment Troubleshoot basic TCP/IP, DHCP, LAN, and connectivity problems Install or service POS systems, kiosks, printers, and commercial hardware Follow instructions from a remote engineer Read and execute a written scope of work Diagnose an unfamiliar problem methodically Produce accurate photos, notes, test records, and closeout documentation Requirements Hands-on experience with hardware and networking Ability to work independently while communicating with remote support Dependable attendance and reliable follow-through Strong customer-service and communication skills Valid driver's license and dependable vehicle Smartphone with internet access and a working camera Field laptop suitable for diagnostics and console work Ability to travel throughout your regional service area Ability to satisfy client-required background and site-access screening Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to use ladders, work above ceilings or inside network closets, bend, kneel, stand, and safely move job-related equipment A college degree is not required. Demonstrated field ability, sound judgment, professionalism, and clean execution matter more than credentials alone. Field Toolkit Technicians must have access to the tools required for their accepted assignments, including: Basic hand tools Punch-down tool, crimper, and cable stripper Cable tester and tone-and-probe kit Multimeter Cordless drill and bits Fish tape or glow rods Ladder Console cable and common adapters Laptop and smartphone Specialty-tool requirements vary by assignment. Helpful Certifications The following are valuable but not required for every technician: CompTIA A+ or Network+ BICSI credentials Fiber Optic Association certification OSHA 10 course-completion card Scissor-lift or aerial-lift training Cisco, Meraki, or other manufacturer credentials Pay and Schedule Technician pay ranges from $20-$35 per hour Starting rate is based on verified skills, experience, market, and assignment complexity Payments are issued weekly for approved work and completed closeouts Eligible after-hours and priority assignments pay an additional premium Work is offered through a flexible, work-order-based schedule Ticket volume varies by market, client demand, availability, skills, and performance Contractors provide their own vehicle; CookTech does not provide a company truck or vehicle stipend Qualifying trips beyond 45 miles include job-specific mileage reimbursement of $0.28-$0.42 per mile, plus approved tolls and parking Grow Beyond the Technician Role CookTech provides a performance-based path for technicians who want more responsibility: Technician → Lead → Administrator or Regional Director → Market Owner Lead technicians can earn performance-based profit sharing while running crews and client work. Administrators and Regional Directors manage larger books of business and can qualify to operate a CookTech market. Advancement is based on clean closeouts, client ratings, reliability, leadership, and the ability to manage work—not simply time served.
