Job Description

The Public Safety IT Specialist is responsible for the administration, maintenance, support, and security of the Police Department's technology systems. This includes computers, mobile data terminals, network infrastructure, body-worn cameras, digital evidence systems, specialized law-enforcement software, and public-safety communications technology. The position ensures uninterrupted IT operations for mission-critical law-enforcement activities, maintains compliance with CJIS and other regulatory requirements, and supports officers and staff with technical expertise.

Systems Administration & Network Support Configure, install, and maintain switches, routers, firewalls, servers, wireless systems, VoIP phones, and network infrastructure. Maintain Active Directory, hybrid Azure environments, Office 365, and domain permissions. Monitor network performance, system availability, and backup status, resolving issues proactively. Develop and maintain data backup and recovery plans; perform system restores when required. Document system configurations, network changes, hardware inventory, and related technical activities. Help oversee public safety technology operations and procurement. Install, maintain, and troubleshoot mobile devices, MDTs, and incar camera systems. Support bodyworn camera systems and digital evidence storage; coordinate with the Evidence Unit for device readiness. Assist investigators with lawful recovery of digital evidence from cityowned and private camera systems. Maintain digital forensics systems used for mobile device evidence collection. Workstation and application Tier I-III technical support Provide handson support for desktops, laptops, peripherals, radios, and other information technologies. Install, configure, and troubleshoot RMS, CAD, and other lawenforcement applications. Lead the annual equipment lifecycle replacement for PCs, printers, and critical IT devices. Train officers and staff on new technologies, cybersecurity awareness, and system best practices. Maintain secure access to criminal justice systems and ensure CJIS compliance across all Police IT systems. Monitor networks for anomalies, threats, and unauthorized activity; respond to cybersecurity incidents. Coordinate with state and local agencies to meet required security standards. Participate in development of IT budget recommendations for Police Department technology needs. Research, recommend, and procure new technology solutions; assist with grant applications for publicsafety systems. Maintain the Police Department Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery plan. Collaborate with vendors supporting 911 phone systems, police radio networks, and municipal camera systems. May work alongside city IT staff to support and address issues that affect the Police Department. Provide afterhours support during emergencies, critical incidents, or major system outages. Work as an emergency responder to maintain communications and information technology services during time of natural disaster or similar emergency. Other activities the city may require. Education /
Experience Requirements:
Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Administration, or related field (equivalent experience may be considered). Minimum of 2 years IT experience, preferably in publicsafety technology setting. Ability to pass a background check, drug test, and obtain/maintain Police Department security clearance. Valid driver s license Excellent problemsolving, communication, and documentation skills. Skills and Character Traits CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+ certifications. Microsoft or Cisco professional certifications. Experience in law enforcement, public safety, or state/local IT environments. Experience with virtual desktop infrastructure. Familiarity with CJIS compliance requirements.
Working Conditions:
Fulltime position; 40 hours per week with occasional afterhours support. Work performed in an office, server room, vehicle bay, or field environment depending on operational needs. May require lifting equipment, climbing ladders, or working in confined spaces.
