Job Title:
Systems Engineer - UAV Programs! Job Description This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs by leading systems engineering activities across the full lifecycle. You will collaborate closely with customers, program management, engineering, production, and operations teams to ensure all project requirements and artifacts are accurately modeled and implemented. The position focuses on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), system architecture definition, and rigorous requirements management to deliver reliable, safe, and airworthy systems. Responsibilities Collaborate with customers, program managers, engineering, production, and operations teams to understand and refine system-level requirements for UAV programs. Define, develop, and model system architectures using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as Cameo or similar platforms. Apply SysML to create clear and traceable system models that accurately represent system behavior, structure, and interfaces. Develop and document system and subsystem requirements, including defining system boundaries, capabilities, functional features, and performance criteria. Coordinate with cross-discipline team members to ensure the implemented design aligns closely with the intended system design and architecture. Monitor and manage full system-level requirements for the overall built system, maintaining traceability from high-level requirements through subsystems and components. Oversee and perform validation and verification activities at both the system and subsystem levels to confirm that requirements are satisfied. Support software architecture activities, including defining interfaces and ensuring software components integrate effectively within the overall system. Conduct functional modeling to analyze system behavior, identify potential issues, and support design decisions. Contribute to reliability, safety, and airworthiness considerations in system design and verification activities, particularly within defense and aviation contexts. Communicate effectively with project and customer teams of various sizes, providing clear status updates, technical explanations, and documentation. Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner while adapting to changing priorities and needs in a smaller, fast-moving organization. Participate in continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, tools, and best practices within the team. Essential Skills 5-10 years of proven experience in systems engineering, preferably supporting complex systems such as UAVs or similar platforms. Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related technical discipline. Eligibility for a Secret security clearance. Hands-on experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools, such as Cameo Systems Modeler or comparable tools. Working knowledge of SysML for modeling system architectures and behaviors. Strong experience in software architecture as it relates to system-level design and integration. Proven experience in functional modeling and system behavior analysis. Demonstrated ability to write clear, complete, and testable system and subsystem requirements. Experience with requirements verification and validation at system and subsystem levels. Familiarity with UAV systems, subsystems, or related aerospace platforms. Experience in defense or aviation environments, including exposure to reliability, airworthiness, and safety considerations. Ability to coordinate effectively with cross-discipline teams to align design implementation with system intent. Strong communication skills for interacting with customers and project teams of varying sizes. Ability to complete tasks on schedule and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic environment. Adaptability to perform a broad range of systems engineering tasks in a smaller organization. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler or other similar MBSE tools is highly beneficial. Reliability engineering experience is helpful, particularly in aerospace, defense, or aviation contexts. Experience with airworthiness, safety, and certification-related considerations is advantageous. Experience working on UAV, defense, or aviation programs is a plus. Demonstrated ability to thrive in a growing organization with opportunities for upward mobility. Interest in working with leadership that remains hands-on and technically engaged. Work Environment This position is fully on-site in a manufacturing environment located in Madison, working within a small, close-knit organization that currently includes three other systems engineers.
