Job Description:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Computer Lab Technician to support and maintain our computing lab environment. This role is ideal for a recent graduate with a strong passion for hardware, including experience with personal computers, Raspberry Pi projects, embedded systems, and enterprise-grade servers. The successful candidate will contribute to both day-to-day lab operations and advanced hardware research initiatives, including the design of high-performance server systems.Key Responsibilities:
Assemble, configure, and maintain computer hardware including desktops, servers, and embedded systems. Identify, source, and integrate server components such as CPUs, RAM, storage, and network interfaces. Design and implement system solutions using operating systems and virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, VirtualBox, KVM). Set up and manage virtual machines for testing, development, and educational purposes. Support lab operations by troubleshooting hardware and software issues across Windows, Linux, and macOS environments. Assist in deploying and maintaining lab networks, including LAN/WAN components and IP management. Document configurations, repairs, and system setups for knowledge sharing and continuity. Provide technical support and guidance to lab users, including students, faculty, and researchers. Stay current with emerging hardware trends and technologies and recommend upgrades or innovations for lab infrastructure.Additional Responsibilities:
Chassis :
Select rack-optimized (e.g., 2U/4U) or tower chassis with robust cooling, high component density support, hot-swap drive bays, and redundant power supply (PSU) options.CPU :
Evaluate high-core-count processors such as (e.g., 9965 with 192 cores) or series based on workload type (e.g., core count vs. clock speed), TDP, and instruction set support (e.g., AVX2/AVX512).Memory :
Specify ECC DDR5 or DDR6 memory with sufficient capacity (e.g., 768GB-1.5TB) and bandwidth, ensuring proper channel population (e.g., 12 DPC) and support for NUMA architecture.Storage :
Design storage solutions using NVMe SSDs over PCIe Gen 4/5 for high I/O workloads, with RAID configurations (e.g., RAID 10) or software-defined storage for performance and redundancy.Network Interfaces :
Choose high-speed NICs (10GbE, 25GbE, or higher) or SmartNICs/DPUs to offload networking tasks and reduce CPU overhead, especially in distributed or cloud-native environments.Accelerators :
Identify use cases for GPUs (e.g., ) or AI inference cards when applicable, ensuring chassis and PSU compatibility.Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field 0-2 years of experience with PC and server hardware assembly and troubleshooting. 0-2 years of experience of Linux system administration and command-line tools. Familiarity with virtualization platforms and containerization tools (e.g., Docker) is a plus. 0-2 years of experience with scripting (Bash, Python) for automation tasks is highly desirable. Knowledge of networking fundamentals and security best practices. Demonstrated passion for hardware tinkering - personal projects involving Raspberry Pi, custom builds, or home labs are strongly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset.Desired Qualifications:
Familiarity with containerization tools (e.g., Docker). Exposure to high-performance computing environments or enterprise infrastructure. Understanding of server architecture, including CPU, memory, storage, and networking trade-offs. Experience with remote server management tools (IPMI, BMC, Redfish). Demonstrated interest in hardware projects (e.g., Raspberry Pi, custom PC builds, home labs).Educational Requirements:
