This role is part of the Platform Reliability Engineering (PRE) team within the Reliability Engineering Organization (REO) and focuses on complex engineering work, including platform design, automation, reliability improvements, and systemic issue prevention-rather than day-to-day operational support. The position emphasizes software engineering, automation, and infrastructure-as-code to improve how platforms are built and maintained, with the goal of reducing manual effort and improving long-term platform stability. Reliability principles are applied through engineering design and code, not through traditional operations or manual execution. This role primarily supports distributed and cloud-based platforms. Build, enhance, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions to improve consistency and eliminate repetitive operational tasks. Design and implement observability capabilities (metrics, logging, tracing, alerting) as part of platform engineering standards. Collaborate with application engineering, architecture, and product teams to embed reliability, performance, and security into platform solutions. Engineer and support distributed database, content, and analytics platforms, including: SQL Server, Oracle, and cloud-native database services FileNet P8, TotalAgility Enterprise analytics and integration platforms Collaborate on engineering and integration efforts involving mainframe systems (IMS/DB2), as needed, in support of broader platform reliability and modernization initiatives. Participate in engineering-led incident response, root cause analysis, and implementation of long-term remediation strategies. Focus on long-term, engineering-based solutions that prevent recurring issues rather than repeated manual intervention. Perform capacity planning, performance engineering, and resiliency design to support evolving business demands. Engineer platform services and automation in AWS, aligned with enterprise cloud and security standards. Participate in a shared engineering on-call rotation, emphasizing diagnosis, automation, and permanent corrective actions, not routine operational tasks. Coordinate as needed with specialized teams on limited IMS and DB2 integration or reliability concerns; this work is not a primary focus of the role. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent experience. Demonstrated proficiency in software engineering, including the ability to: Write production-quality code Develop net-new automation, tooling, or services Apply software engineering practices to infrastructure and platform domains Experience engineering and supporting data, content, or analytics platforms (e.g., SQL Server, cloud-native databases, FileNet P8, TotalAgility, Informatica, Tableau, Business Objects, or similar technologies). Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably AWS. Experience implementing automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Python, PowerShell, or equivalent. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and critical thinking skills in complex, distributed environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience engineering AWS-based data services (e.g., Amazon RDS, Aurora, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB). Experience designing and implementing observability and reliability patterns within platform architectures. Knowledge of high availability, disaster recovery, and resiliency design patterns. Experience integrating platforms with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks. Experience with tools such as Dynatrace, Terraform, CloudFormation, or Python-based automation.
