Full Job Description Overview:
MxV Rail seeks a Senior Systems Engineer I to support the Communications and Train Control (C&TC) team in defining, designing, modeling, testing, and evaluating C&TC technologies for the railroad industry. We seek a talented and highly motivated engineer to support current and next-generation train control technology and railway operations research. The successful candidate will support the research and systems engineering of Positive Train Control (PTC) systems, railroad safety systems, automation technology, lifecycle management, and/or other C&TC areas of activity.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Senior Systems Engineer I is responsible for providing professional engineering and scientific services to internal and external customers as directed by the Staff Leader. This role involves using engineering principles, systems engineering, requirements management tools, railroad domain knowledge, and data analysis for research and engineering of train control systems. The successful candidate is expected to participate in all phases of projects by assisting in concept, requirements, standard development, modeling, implementation, test planning, test execution, data analysis, presentations, and report writing. The successful candidate is also expected to support project leadership activities, which include assisting in proposal preparation, project planning, project execution, customer interaction, and deliverable preparation. Essential duties include, but are not limited to: Development of systems engineering documentation, including formal system functional and performance requirements, interface specifications, and standards. Participating in problem definition and technical needs analysis across various projects within C&TC. Supporting the established configuration management process for standards and requirements specifications using requirements management tools. Development of system concepts and formal system Concepts of Operations documents. Performing requirements tracing tasks within requirements management tools. Defining verification methods for requirements. Research and evaluation of train control and automation technology. Working independently or within a multi-disciplinary group composed of MxV Rail staff, railroad personnel, and vendor product development personnel. Supporting identification and development of project opportunities and technical capabilities to support industry needs related to train control applications. Ensures that all duties and responsibilities are performed safely. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other duties may include:
Participating in system safety activities to support the development of systems engineering documentation. Supporting the definition and execution of formal test cases and test programs. Performing simulations and data analysis related to train control systems. Applying statistical methods to determine requirements, processes, and standards. Supporting technology research and development activities. Performing data collection, organization, and analysis using common or customized tools and techniques. Project management and mentoring.
Required Skills & Abilities:
Open to learning and living the MxV Rail values (Momentum, Insight, Teamwork, Rigor, Purpose) in all facets of the organization's work. Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience. Three to five years of professional engineering experience in the areas of systems engineering, train operations, or train control.
Experience with the following:
Systems engineering concepts, particularly the system definition process (requirements analysis, system concept definition, and requirements definition) and test methodology (test case definition, test design). Projects involving the development of practical solutions to unique, open-ended problems. Working across different levels within and outside an organization. Familiarity with the development of formal systems engineering documentation. Ability to apply logical and methodical approaches to solving engineering problems. Work independently and within a team in a hybrid work environment. Familiarity with requirements management, including requirements management tools and requirements tracing activities. Excellent verbal and written communication, along with demonstrable public speaking skills. Capable of preparing and delivering technical presentations to scientific groups. Demonstrate computer skills, with experience using Microsoft® Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with the following: Working with engineering projects related to PTC systems. Testing system requirements, including familiarity with test case management, software tools, and traceability of test cases to system requirements. Industry committees and/or professional/technical organizations responsible for standards setting. Computer programming, computer-based analysis, computer-aided design, and computer-based modeling.
Familiarity with the following:
Basic understanding of risk/threat/hazard analysis. Reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis concepts. Proficient in testing methods, data collection, analysis techniques, and reporting.

Office and field environments. Must be able to walk in an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces such as ballast.

Travel :
Travel will be required to support industry events and outreach. Travel is estimated at 15%.
