Job Description

Summary:
The Cloud Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and operating enterprise compute platforms across a hybrid environment spanning on-prem data centers and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This role focuses heavily on Google Compute Engine (GCE), cloud-native hypervisors, VMware virtualization, Unix OS and workload migrations across cloud and on-prem environments. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who can translate architectural designs into scalable, automated, and production-ready solutions while driving standardization, automation, and operational excellence across Linux-based environments and IBM Power Systems platforms.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, build, and support compute platforms across hybrid environments, including on-prem data centers and Google Cloud (GCE). Engineer and manage cloud-native and traditional virtualization platforms, including GCE, VMware (vSphere/vCenter), and IBM Power Systems (PowerVM). Lead and execute migrations across environments (on-prem to cloud, cloud-to-cloud), leveraging tools such as VMware HCX and native cloud migration frameworks. Support and maintain IBM Power Systems infrastructure, including AIX-based workloads and integrations within hybrid environments. Translate high-level architecture designs into fully implemented, production-ready infrastructure solutions. Manage and optimize hybrid infrastructure environments, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and performance. Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using industry-standard tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.) to enable repeatable and automated deployments. Drive automation initiatives across provisioning, configuration management, patching, and operational workflows. Build, configure, and maintain Linux-based systems across multiple distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE), with AIX knowledge considered a strong advantage. Support and manage enterprise OS environments, including OS tuning, patching, security hardening, and lifecycle management. Partner with middleware, application, and DevOps teams to align infrastructure capabilities with application requirements. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, promoting best practices and engineering standards. Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for infrastructure incidents and drive long-term stability improvements. Ensure compliance with enterprise standards, security policies, and configuration baselines. Participate in on-call rotation and provide support for critical production systems as needed.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with deep focus on Google Compute Engine (GCE). Deep understanding of cloud-native hypervisors vs. traditional virtualization platforms. Advanced experience with VMware technologies, including vSphere, vCenter, and HCX migration capabilities. Hands-on experience with IBM Power Systems (Power Series), including PowerVM and AIX operating systems. Proven ability to manage and operate hybrid cloud environments (on-prem + cloud). Strong hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) and automation frameworks. Deep knowledge of Linux operating systems across multiple distributions; AIX expertise highly desirable. Strong understanding of compute, storage, and networking fundamentals across both x86 and Power architectures. Experience implementing and optimizing automation-first engineering practices. Ability to convert architectural designs into deployable solutions with strong attention to execution quality. Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams (applications, middleware, networking, security). Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and pride in delivering high-quality engineering outcomes. Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers, driving technical capability uplift across the team.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience. 5-8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, or platform operations. Hands-on experience with GCP or major cloud platforms (AWS/Azure transferable). Experience with VMware virtualization and enterprise Linux environments. Exposure to hybrid environments and multi-platform infrastructure (x86 + Power Systems preferred).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with IBM Power Systems and AIX administration in enterprise environments. Experience with VMware HCX and large-scale migration programs. Experience with multi-cloud environments and cloud migration strategies. Strong background in automation, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines. Experience with enterprise-scale infrastructure design and implementation. Exposure to FinOps, capacity planning, and infrastructure optimization.
