SUMMARY:
The Data Engineer II will play a key role in designing, building, and optimizing data pipelines and architectures to support construction industry-specific analytics and business intelligence initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, cloud technologies, and data visualization tools, as well as a deep understanding of construction project workflows, cost optimization, and operational efficiency. This role will work on-site 5 days per week in Escondido, CA, collaborating with cross-functional teams to leverage data as a strategic asset, enhancing decision-making across the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Cleaning and Transformation:
Design, write, and optimize complex SQL queries, views, and stored procedures supporting analytics, reporting, and downstream integrations.
Data Ingestion and Pipeline Development:
Develop and maintain reliable and scalable automated data pipelines that ingest, standardize, and deliver data from various operational sources into the enterprise data platform.
Data Modeling and Design:
Create robust data models representing construction project elements, such as schedules, costs, and resources, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
Integration Design and Implementation:
Build API-based data integrations to extract data from construction platforms such as project management systems, ERP, estimating and bidding software, BIM and virtual construction tools, HCM systems, and site monitoring solutions, consolidating it into a unified data repository.
Research and Innovation:
Continuously research emerging technologies to optimize data engineering practices.
Requirements Discovery and Collaboration:
Partner with business owners, analysts, and operational stakeholders to understand data sources, business processes, and technical requirements; translate those requirements into well designed data pipelines and models.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong SQL and Python skills, including the ability to design, write, and optimize complex SQL queries, views, and stored procedures. Expertise in cloud platforms such as Azure and Snowflake, including deploying, operating, and supporting data solutions in cloud environments. Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines such as SSIS, MuleSoft, Azure Data Factory, or similar integration tools. Experience with data visualization and reporting tools, such as Tableau or Power BI to support interactive dashboards and downstream analytics use cases. Proven experience to gather, analyze, and document business and technical requirements, and translate them into clear technical designs and scalable data pipelines through collaboration with non technical and semi technical stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in construction, energy, or industrial services environments, supporting data-driven operational and project workflows. Familiarity with systems such as Procore, BuildOps, Spectrum, Salesforce, or Dayforce General understanding of project lifecycle concepts, cost structures, or operational KPIs Experience building dashboards and reports that provide actionable insights into project performance, risk management, and cost forecasting.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field. 3-5 years of professional experience in data engineering, preferably in the construction industry. Relevant certifications in cloud platforms or data engineering are a plus. At Baker, we are proud to be an employee-owned company. PAY TRANSPARENCY
The starting salary for this opportunity range is listed. Other rewards may include annual bonus eligibility based on company and individual performance, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards.
