The Data Research Analyst supports NACO's research and data initiatives by collecting, organizing, and analyzing information from county, state, and federal sources; developing accessible reports and dashboards; and producing visualizations that make complex information easy to understand. The role also supports NACO's marketing and advocacy efforts by helping translate data and research into clear, compelling content for outreach, communications, and policy engagement. Working closely with the staff across the organization, the Data Research Analyst helps ensure stakeholders receive accurate, timely, and user-friendly data resources. Responsibilities Data Collection, Organization & Quality Assurance Collect, compile, and update datasets from county, state, and federal sources. Clean and check data for accuracy, consistency, and completeness. Maintain organized data files, documentation, and data inventories. Prepare datasets for analysis, mapping, and reporting. Reporting & Data Communication Produce clear, accessible reports, tables, fact sheets, and summaries for county officials and staff. Create standardized templates for recurring data updates. Assist with compiling content for legislative reports, presentations, and newsletters. Translate data findings into easy-to-understand language for nontechnical audiences. Data Visualization Create charts, graphs, and visual summaries using Excel, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools. Support development of internal dashboards used by NACO program and policy staff. Design visuals that highlight trends, comparisons, or county-level differences. AI-Supported Research & Analysis Use approved AI platforms to supplement research, data review, and report preparation. Apply AI tools responsibly to enhance data processing, summarization, and visualization tasks. Follow organizational guidelines for accuracy, verification, and ethical AI use. GIS & Mapping Support Complete mapping tasks using ArcGIS. Update GIS layers and create simple county-level maps to support research and communications. Maintain organized map files and metadata. Stakeholder & Internal Support Provide support to staff working on research, training materials, and presentations. Assist in documenting workflows to improve internal knowledge and efficiency. Communicate policy positions to internal and external stakeholders Team Collaboration Work closely with research, policy, and communications teams to align data products with county needs. Help ensure data products are consistent, user-friendly, and mission-aligned. Participate in planning discussions and contribute ideas for improving data tools and reporting processes. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in public policy, public administration, data science, statistics, geography, economics, or a related field; OR equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience. Strong skills in Excel, including data cleaning, tables, and basic charts. Experience with at least one data visualization tool (Power BI, Tableau, Google Data Studio, etc.). Experience with GIS software management (ArcGIS). Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. Ability to clearly communicate data findings in writing and verbally. Interest in public-sector work and the role of county governments. Qualifications - Preferred Experience working with government data or public datasets. Familiarity with public-sector issues affecting counties. Experience producing reports or dashboards for public audiences. Experience with analytical tools (Python). Experience in a nonprofit, government, or association environment.
