Job Description
Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS), Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET), Department of Peace Operation (DPO), New York. The Data Scientist reports to the Senior Programme Management Officer. The focus of this job is to support peacekeeping operations to monitor, analyse, and respond to mis/dis/malinformation and hate speech. The Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) is mandated to develop and disseminate the policy and doctrine guiding the work of Peacekeeping Operations. In addition, the division has the responsibility to evaluate, at the request of the heads of the departments, how those policies are being applied, gather lessons learned and best practices, and use that information to guide the development, coordination and delivery of standardized training, so as to complete the learning cycle. DPET is also responsible for developing and maintaining strategic cooperation with various UN and external partners. The Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS) is part of the Policy Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) of the Department of Peace Operations. It provides support to both DPO and DOS. The core function of PBPS is to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations through the exchange of good practices between missions, the development of guidance material that reflects lessons learned, and thematic policy support in selected areas. PBPS also leads several reform process. Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Data Scientist will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic and may not be performed by all Data Scientists.)
Data Analysis:
Analyze large, complex datasets to extract insights through the use of appropriate techniques and platforms.Reporting:
Prepare reports that effectively communicate trends and patterns using relevant data and visualisations.Data Protection:
Ensure data integrity and compliance with privacy regulations and best practices at the UN.- Work with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging data to drive business solutions, including liaising with technology providers, civil society, international organizations and Member States.
- Mine and analyze data from organization databases to drive optimization and improvement of programme development, advocacy and business strategies.
- Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
- Develop technology solutions for the purpose of monitoring and analysing the digital information environment.
- Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize entity experiences, benefit realization and other business outcomes.
- Develop organization A/B testing framework and test model quality.
- Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
- Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in data science, computer science, information management, statistics, public administration, public information, management or a related field. Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management or related area is required. Experience developing technology solutions related to mis/disinformation is required Experience in developing and providing training on analysis of the digital information environment is required. Experience of data Science tools such as Jupyter, Matlab, Knime, SPSS, SAS, or similar Statistical Programming Languages such as R, Python, Javascript or related is desirable. Experience in using data to advance decisions, strategies and execution is desirable. Experience within the UN system is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
