Job Summary We are seeking a highly motivated, analytically-minded Junior Computational Engineer / Mechanical Engineer specializing in Numerical Modeling to maintain, optimize, and update an in-house 1-D Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation package. This software simulates complex fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena. As the primary owner of this critical engineering tool, your efforts will directly contribute to the successful design and testing of novel thermomechanical systems.
Duties Numerical Modeling:
Troubleshoot, refine, and document an existing 1-D MATLAB simulation code. Implement new boundary conditions, material properties, and physical sub-models into the existing codebase. Compare simulation results against empirical data to assess and improve accuracy.
Mechanical Design:
Contribute to design conceptualization, realization, and testing, including CAD design in
SOLIDWORKS, 3D
printing, and physical assembly/integration of prototypes.
Technical Communication:
Organize, analyze, and present data and inferences in technical and academic settings.
Adapt and Grow:
Develop new skills and knowledge to help our small team succeed. Base Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computational Engineering, or Applied Mathematics.
Core Coursework:
Proven academic exposure to Numerical Methods / Numerical Analysis, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Mechanics. Understanding of discretization concepts (e.g., Finite Element, Finite Difference, or Finite Volume methods). Strong foundations in MATLAB (or equivalent matrix-based languages like Python/NumPy). Must understand array manipulation, matrix assembly, and loop optimization. Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) for 3D modeling and drafting. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a dynamic environment. Solid communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting. Preferred Qualifications M.S. degree with a thesis focused on numerical modeling or computational physics. Capstone or other significant project involving shape-memory/super-elastic materials. Capstone or other significant project involving an HVAC/R or power generation system that demonstrates the application of thermodynamics and heat transfer principles. Experience assembling, disassembling, or repairing complex machines/mechanisms. Working knowledge of SLA/resin 3D printing. Machine shop experience and willingness to operate (or learn to operate) metal shop tools such as the vertical mill or lathe. About Us Barrow Green is a small deep-tech start-up pioneering efficient and sustainable solid-state heat pumps.
